Each Sunday evening for the past two months, I’ve walked out of Pier 23 with a little pride from playing a cool twilight gig on the water, carrying my guitar in one hand and the other clutching a sack of Nightingale ice cream sandwiches.

Sadly, the joint had to shut down this week. All its very young staff, it seemed, had their “Wake up, Maggie, I think I’ve got something to say to you,” moment.

They left their hostess stand, service stations and the walk-in and went back to school. (Or perhaps they stole their daddy’s cue and made a living playing pool.)

So, tonight I opened the last ice cream sandwich up with the fury of the lady who rolls out the pretzel log dough at the Amish market.

Get busy livin’, or get busy dying.

Here’s the difference between a punk show in 2008 at the Tavern and a punk show at the Globe in Berlin in 2023.

At the Tavern, by 145am, some nerd would have sucker punched somebody and the pit would descend into a brawl and we’d be mopping up blood and putting people in ambulances until 3am.

In 2023 Berlin, the fist fight, brawl and subsequent blood mopping happens at 930pm and we’re all home in time for the 11pm news.
