BERC China Focus

BERC China Focus A interdisciplinary organization interested in China and its energy and environmental developments.

A community of Berkeley Energy and Resources Collaborative (BERC) BERC China Focus is dedicated to learning about China’s developments in the environmental and energy-related sectors. As you may know, China is one of the world’s leaders in pursuing more sustainable technologies, and we feel that no significant progress in alternative energy or climate change can be made without China’s cooperation

. Our members publish weekly sector-specific China news summaries in the BERC blog (Blogs written fall semester 2012 found here: http://berc.berkeley.edu/author/energyfolksuser_9242/) . We also hold regular meetings to engage in multi-faceted discussions to analyze cultural, political, and economic factors in these developments. In addition, we work with campus faculty as well as China-related groups throughout the Bay Area to host events and work on collaborative projects. Come learn more on what we have to offer and email [email protected] to keep updated in our listserve!

This Tuesday, we had a Coffee Chat with Professor Mi at The Musical Offering & Cafe. Professor Mi introduced how the membranes work to intercept the desired molecules, and the production, innovation and application of membranes. She explained that new materials have drastically improved the separation ability and reduced costs of production, so membrane technologies are able to help us in many fields including waste treatment, medical application and water security. She also highlighted the cooperative researches on membrane technologies by China and US.

We had two terrific speakers from the China Energy Group of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Shen introduce the development of China's carbon market and what China can learn from California's cap and trade. Following, Dr. Ye focused on a specific case study of Shenzhen's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) and introduced the top design ideas behind the Shenzhen ETS, including the Measurement, Reporting, & Verification (MRV) rules, allowance allocation methods, and the latest market operation status.

It was a very successful event and thank you all for coming!
