I’m in a rut, at the moment. This happens every time I finish a project. When it’s big enough, like a novel, the rut can last a while. This isn’t writer’s block, mind you. It’s a refractory period. Refractory periods are real (not implying that writer’s block is not) and can happen to anyone after any big or small, good or bad stress reactions. They refer to some kind of time-out, and in neurophysiology, they can be observed when your neurons take a rest after they’ve just been fired.

Sometimes, I deal with my rut by playing with more words. I haiku. It takes only 17 syllables, and rhyming is not essential.

When you find yourself in a rut or you're just bored. Haiku yourself out of it. It's fun and it's easy. You only need about 17 syllables.

Locals like to call Bordeaux,—a port city known as Port de la lune (Port of the Moon)—“le petit Paris.” Maybe, this is an attempt to attract tourists. Images are both essential and important for all modern-day book covers. They’re the first and most obvious means authors and publishers inject art into books, and since covers are what may initially attract a potential reader, they help sell books.

Nick Bantock’s Griffin and Sabine Trilogy (see my review) and Antoine de Saint Exupery’s The Little Prince are two magical books of fiction about life—seen from the unalloyed wisdom of a child (The Little Prince) and the introspective musings of artists (Griffin and Sabine Trilogy). The books themselves constitute the art instead of art as a theme or a thread in the stories.
