State Annual Singing Convention - Benson Sing

State Annual Singing Convention - Benson Sing Weekend of the 4th Sunday in June. 100+ years of great gospel music in the Benson Singing Grove

Operating as usual

Ecclesiastes 3:1
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven

After over 2 years of ministry, Gwen and Greg have decided to come off of the road to focus more time to working in our local church.

We love and appreciate them for their dedication to serving the Lord!

While we are sad to see them go, we are excited about what God has in store for this ministry! (And we’ll see them at church when we aren’t on the road!)

Keep us in your prayers as we transition into this new season! We know God has a plan and where He leads, we’ll follow!

If you enjoy attending and following the Benson Sing, now would be a great time to invite your friends to follow this page. You should also invite them to attend the sing with you this year June 23-25, 2023. Thank you!

We are so excited to welcome back Karen Peck and New River, as well as The Whisnants to the 2023 Benson Sing. They've both been with us in years past, and are certainly some of our favorites. You don't want to miss this year. For 2024, we've booked two groups that have NEVER been with us at the State Annual Singing Convention. Would you want to take a guess as to who they are? Go!

Our featured artists for our February concert are, Forever Changed and Mercy's Well!

Remembering Jerry Kirksey

Jerry Kirksey, Editor Emeritus of Singing News Magazine, passed away today at the age of 82. Mr. Kirksey had been in declining health for several years.
Born in Panama City, Florida, on June 13, 1940, Jerry and his family returned to his parents’ hometown of Pensacola following World War II. It was during his junior year of high school that Jerry first began working in one of his greatest passions, radio. After his graduation as a part of the Class of 1958, Jerry moved back to Panama City to begin work with WTHR Radio.
A return to Pensacola in March of 1960 set Jerry on the path that would ultimately defining his professional career. Jerry began working with The Florida Boys, as the quartet’s promotional director and office manager. This led to a working relationship with J.G. Whitfield. Jerry would work closely with Mr. Whitfield as the Southern Gospel music icon promoted concerts across the nation, and eventually launch what went on to become the largest and oldest Southern Gospel music publication, Singing News Magazine. Jerry served with Singing News Magazine from May 1969 until his retirement in 2010, encompassing a total of 492 issues. During his time at the magazine, Jerry created Southern Gospel music’s first National Radio Airplay Chart (1970) and the Singing News Fan Awards (1971).
In addition to his work with Singing News, Jerry served on the board of directors of the original Gospel Music Association, and the board of the original Southern Gospel Music Association of Georgia. He was involved in organizing the Southern Gospel Music Guild and the modern-day Southern Gospel Music Association. He was actively involved in the building and development of the original SGMA Hall of Fame and Museum at Dollywood. Jerry was inducted into the SGMA Hall of Fame in 2011.
Jerry married Carolyn Sue Rhodes on October 1, 1967. Sons Kenneth and Brett would eventually work with Jerry at Singing News, especially after the family moved to Boone, North Carolina, in 1987 following the sale of the publication to North Carolina businessman Maurice Templeton. Likewise, Carolyn was a fixture at many Southern Gospel concerts as she and Jerry represented Singing News across the nation. Carolyn passed away in July of 2015.
Funeral arrangements are pending at this time. A complete tribute to Jerry will be found in the March 2023 issue of Singing News.

STATE ANNUAL SINGING CONVENTION - COMPETITION Thank you for your interest in singing this year at the Benson Sing. We ...
State Annual Singing Convention

Thank you for your interest in singing this year at the Benson Sing. We wanted to give you a heads up on a portion of the schedule for 2023. On Saturday morning, we are again having the competition. In the past few years, the participation in all categories has not been what we had hoped, so we are minimizing the competition categories, as well as adding an opportunity for soloist. We would love to have you join us! Any individual is limited to singing in 2 groups, and only 1 per category. For instance, an individual cannot sing in a trio & a duet. However, that individual could sing in a trio, and a quartet. Other rules of the competition apply as they have in the past, and are noted on the website.
The categories will be as follows:
Juniors (16 years old & younger)
Soloist (maximum of 10 entries before cutoff)
Duets/Trios – 1 category
Quartets/Family/Ensemble – 1 category
There will be a trophy given for best live accompaniment.
The Grand Champion winner will receive $500.
The Consolation winner - $250
Our website will be updated, and we are encouraging groups to pre-register at the email address shown on With that comes a $25 donation to enter. We will end pre-registration 30 days prior to the sing. If you register May 24th or after, the registration fee becomes $30. Your registration is not confirmed until payment is received. The competition will begin promptly at 10 AM on Saturday morning, and a member of your group is requested to check in by 9 AM. The winners will be announced on Sunday at 1:00 PM. The registration fee is nonrefundable should your group not show up to participate.
The pre-registration, and the fee is imperative so that we know how many to expect, and can plan the remainder of the day, and reward those winners accordingly. Please feel free to message us or again email through the website if you have any questions, and we will respond as quickly as possible.
We look forward to having you join us at this year’s Benson Sing! Until then, blessings to you as you minister in song!

Why not speak with your minister of music about bringing your choir to the Benson Sing on Friday night. We would love to hear your church choir. Please feel free to have your worship leader contact us! The finale will again be with our friends the Wilmington Celebration Choir. It's going to be BIG!

“I FEEL SO GOOD ABOUT IT” is on the air at radio stations everywhere!
Everything old is new again as they put a fresh spin on this gospel classic from 1974. Official Video premier is this week. Stay tuned and don’t miss it!

A lady went to the Pastor and said🙍🏾 ... "I won’t be attending Church anymore."
He said, "May I ask why??"
She said, "I see people on their cell phones during the service, some are gossiping, some just ain’t living right, they are all just hypocrites."
The Pastor got silent and he said, "Ok... But can I ask you to do something for me before you make your final decision?"
She said, "What’s that?"
He said, "Take a glass of water and walk around the Church 2 times and don’t let any water fall out the glass."
She said, "Yes I can do that."
She came back and said "It’s done."
He asked her 3 questions:
1. Did you see anybody on their phone?
2. Did you see anybody gossiping?
3. Was anybody living wrong?
She said, "I didn’t see anything because I was so focused on this glass, so the water wouldn’t fall."
He told her, "When you come to Church, you should be just that focused on God , so that you don’t fall. That’s why Jesus said 'Follow me.' He did not say follow Christians. Don’t let your relationship with God be determined by how others relate with God. Let it be determined by how focused YOU are on God."

Keep checking back with this page in the next few weeks for info on this years sing. We look forward to welcoming Karen Peck and New River and The Whisnants

I Go to Sing

I might be exhausted and the children might be cranky,
but I will be going to church on Sunday.
Don’t know who is preaching, doesn’t matter –
the sermon may be helpful or not, holds my attention or doesn’t –
it’s the singing.
I go to sing.

I get up,
get clean,
get dressed,
possibly get mad (at not-ready kids, at empty coffee pot, at traffic)
get going,
get there,
get seated,
get comfortable,
get focused

and when the music starts,

get saved.

It’s the singing.
I go to sing.

It’s the willingness to stand if you are able,
the common agreement on page number,
the voluntary sharing of songbooks with people on your row,
even ones you rode there with –

but most of all,
it’s the collective in-breath before the first sound is made,
the collective drawing upon the grace of God,
the collective, if inadvertent, admission
that we are all human,
all fragile,
all in need of the sustaining air, freely dispensed,
all in need of each other to get the key right and not sound discordant –-

it’s the hidden life-celebration
in the act of making a joyful noise,
all together.

We don’t even have to sound that good.
Singing together still brings home
the we-ness of worship,
the not-alone-ness of life in God,
the best of all we have to offer each other.

When we are singing, I think that I might actually be able to forgive you
for being so terribly human,
and you might be able to forgive me
for being so terribly not there yet,
and we might be able to find peace now,
not postpone it for some heavenly hereafter
but live and breathe it today,
drawing in the grace of God,
voicing out our need and hope and gratitude and longing.

When we are singing, I can feel the better world coming,
and if I get to be a part of it, you do too . . .

so sing with me,
and we’ll make our way down that blessed road together,
collectively better
than we ever thought

I just pulled over in my church parking lot to write this because it’s burning in my soul.

Christmas was never meant to be a burden.

Paying expedited shipping to make it magical and stressing about going into *more* debt and keeping up with all the pics we see on social media is an absolute scam.

A scam of evil proportions.

Don’t get me wrong.
I’ve done it.

That’s how I know … it’s a scam.

We’ve got to let it go.

I’m not going to pretend to know what that means for everyone, but I hope it gives you permission to release yourself from the charades and parades and all the demands that are never ending.

He came to free us.
Not burden us.

🎉❤️ 60 years together! 🎉❤️ Help us wish Bill and Gloria Gaither a very happy anniversary in the comments below!

Bring them to church. Saturate their lives with the Word of God. Even if they lay on the floor. Even if they need 437 goldfish and a sucker to be quiet. Even if you stand in the back swaying back and forth holding them. Even when it’s hard. Even when when your row looks like a small hurricane just came through. Bring them to church. Let them see you worship. Let them see you pray. Let them see you running toward the Savior ... because if they don’t see and learn these things from you, who are they going to learn them from?

The world will teach them it’s not a priority. The world will teach them it’s okay to lay out, not to pick up their Bibles. The world will direct them so far off course, confuse them, and misinform them that just being “good” is enough. The world won’t teach them about Jesus. That’s our job.

Bring them to church.

Matthew 18:5-6 And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me. But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to have a large millstone tied around your neck and be drowned in the depths of the sea. Teaching kids is a huge responsibility. We must take it seriously and do it well. Prepare well, speak truth, and remember they are God’s kids first.

Join us as we sing out the old year and welcome in the new (a few hours early.) Come enjoy some Great Gospel Music from some of your favorite groups in the state of South Carolina.

BENSON NC - State Annual Singing Convention - Benson Sing Triumphant Quartet, The Griffins and more on Saturday June 25, 2022! A day of fun, food and fellowship at The Grove!
I grew up here (Raleigh) and have been a HUGE southern gospel music fan since I was a little girl. I grew up watching Gaither Homecoming every Saturday night and wouldn't miss it for anything! I was so excited when I found out Ernie Haas was coming to Benson! I assumed it would be at a church 🤷‍♀️. As I began to look up details, I discovered the convention! I never knew this convention existed! Then I read it was the 100th anniversary! How special! Then I saw the Hoppers were just kept getting better and better!

We were not able to attend Friday night, but came out early Saturday and Sunday afternoon. What an incredible blessing it was! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! Our 5 yo has been singing "It's shoutin time in heaven...." ever since we left. She said "This weekend was so much fun! Can we come back next weekend"? She was heartbroken to learn she'd have to wait a year, but is already looking forward to it, as are we!

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who made this event happen...from the board of directors to sponsors, volunteers and countless others who helped to make it such a great success. We are so grateful and appreciative! We will be praying over this next year and look forward to returning!
Blessings and love, The Lipscomb Family - Dwayne, Heather, Olivia (5), Sophia (6mos)

2:30pm - Convention Choir
3:10pm - Memorial Service and Guest Recognition

Today marks 11 years that my dad went to his heavenly home. It was the weekend of the
State Annual Singing Convention - Benson Sing. This year is the 100th anniversary (checkout Tarheel Traveler below) and my dad was an integral part. He had been at the grove that morning volunteering and doing what he loved.

Besides clowning, it was one of the events he never missed. After he passed, my brother made two special appearances in memory of our dad. He paraded as “Happy” at Southport’s Annual 4th of July parade and at the Benson Mule Days® parade.

As time has passed, it has gotten easier but the memories never fade. They’ve only become stronger and live on through the pictures and stories we share of him. We always find quarters (and only quarters) at the most unusual times and places. It’s a God wink from Dad that warms my heart every time.

I know the streets of heaven are full of happiness as he and his clown buddies are parading around pain free and making people smile.
