I’m working on another commissioned portrait! It’s a memorial portrait of a gorgeous tricolor basenji named Romeo. He was an AKC Grand Champion and lived a long life full of love and joy. I feel honored to be able to try to capture his sweet soul in a portrait. 🥰

I’m about halfway through. Working on the mid layers of dark areas first.

Size: 9x12. Paper: Pastelmat. I’m using a combo of Panpastels, soft pastels, and pastel pencils (Pitt, Carbothello, Derwent, and Cretacolor).

Ribbon is finished and shipped! This was definitely a fun project. 🥰

Today’s progress: I adjusted the background more and worked on the blanket and pillows. I am happier with the background and stuff now. It’s important to get all that finished before continuing with the dog in order to get the right depth to the portrait. At this point I’m probably 70% done.

It’s been a while since I posted a progress report on this portrait. I’ve been feeling “stuck” on moving forward on it, so I’ve stepped back and have given it some thought. I think the background colors are too vibrant so I’m starting with toning it down before I continue with the dog. The pillow just to the left of the dog is bugging me, too, so I might just make it disappear. 🤔

The work often goes in spurts like this, and I just consider it part of the process.
