Dvořák’s cello center is widely considered the crown jewel of the cello repertoire. He composed the piece in 1895 while serving as director of the National Conservatory in New York, a period deeply marked by his intense homesickness for Bohemia. The concerto is also tied to a profound personal sorrow: during its composition, he received news that his sister-in-law, Josefina Kaunitzová—his first great love—was gravely ill.
Annie Rhew, one of 2026 Travis Hatton Young Artists Competition winners, will be performing the first movement from Dvorak’s Cello Concerto on Sunday, May 31 with the Beaverton Symphony Orchestra at the Village Church. Tickets can be purchased at Beavertonsymphony.org. See you at the concert!

Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47 features a massive first-movement solo cadenza that completely replaces the traditional orchestral development section. He designed it as a technically punishing showcase to fulfill his own unfulfilled dreams of becoming a virtuoso violinist. Come hear Andrew Lee perform this concerto with the Beaverton Symphony this Friday, May 29 and Sunday, May 31. Tickets on sale now at Beavertonsymphony.org.
