My essay “The Law of Moral Recursion: Knowing When to Stop” is published at The Pittsburgh Review of Books. https://pghrev.com/the-law-of-moral-recursion-knowing-when-to-stop/
“There is the response the harm justifies. Then there is what fear, rage, humiliation, righteousness, and inherited grievance want to add to it. The second thing is moral surplus. Without moral surplus, harm and response is a closed sequence. It ends. Moral surplus is what keeps it open. The excess becomes a new injury, and that injury becomes someone else’s organizing fear. Recursion is what the surplus produces. The vernacular for it is to make them pay. It borrows the language of debt and never states a sum.” — KC Clarke
