Each month in our newsletter we highlight a business, organization or artist that we f*ck with! For June’s edition of People We F*ck With, we are shouting out a near and dear artist to The Cordial Eye community: Lipe Borges, aka !
Lipe “Curioso” is a Brazilian Capoeirista based on Cape Cod. His work centers on Capoeira (an Afro-Brazilian martial art that includes elements of dance, music, and acrobatics) as a practice of play, music, and collective care. Lipe was a member of the first ever cohort of Creative Futures Cape Cod, where he focused on photojournalistic work, has developed a more recent practice as a Capoerista (catch him at in Harwich!), and is a one of the Teaching Artists for Creative Care, our art-therapy-infused program for youth.
This past weekend, Lipe hosted a Capoeira roda- a circular formation where participants perform and “play” Capoeira, musicians play traditional instruments, and the community gathers in an exchange of support and positive energy. It was a gift to see the Capoeria community that Lipe has been instrumental building on Cape Cod. There were attendees of all ages and experience levels, notably, Spike, a long-time youth student at The Cordial Eye! Through their encounter with Lipe as a Teaching Artist at The Cordial Eye, Spike became empowered to engage with the broader capoeira community and to show the ropes to a newcomer.
