“Island Connection”
📍 Deer Isle, Maine
🗓️ November 6, 2024
The Deer Isle Suspension Bridge was built in 1937 and continues to serve as the only connection between the islands of Deer Isle and Stonington to mainland Maine.
It opened in 1939 with the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Tacoma, Washington opening a year later in 1940. They were both built to be extra sleek and narrow compared to regular bridges following design trends of the 30’s. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge famously wobbled itself apart in 42mph winds only four months after opening. There is video footage of this happening if you’re interested in watching. They then immediately reinforced the Deer Isle Bridge after watching that disaster unfold.
