What a day!

From golden light to wildlife wonder, our group had an unforgettable day capturing the beauty of St. Augustine. The perfect cherry on top? An epic evening on the water with Captain Zach of St. Augustine Eco Tours!!

We explored the hidden stories of the coastline, met some incredible local wildlife, and gained a deeper appreciation for the connection between this historic town and its natural world.

Huge thanks to Zach for sharing his passion and knowledge, it elevated our experience beyond the lens.

Here’s a list of birds and wildlife commonly seen during boat tours along the Matanzas River and Salt Run near St. Augustine, Florida. This area is part of the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve and is rich in biodiversity, especially for coastal and estuarine species.

In the fall, Manitoba's elk (wapiti) are highly active as it’s the rutting (mating) season, which generally peaks in late September and early October. Here’s what you can typically observe:

1. Bugling: Male elk (bulls) produce loud, high-pitched calls called bugles to establish dominance, attract mates, and warn off other bulls. These haunting calls can echo through valleys and forests.

2. Sparring: Bulls often engage in sparring, where they clash their antlers in displays of strength. While these contests can be intense, they rarely lead to serious injury, as the goal is often to intimidate rather than injure.

3. Herd Behavior: Bulls gather and protect harems of females (cows), aggressively defending them from rival bulls. These harems can vary in size depending on the bull’s strength and attractiveness.

4. Increased Movement: Elk are generally more visible during the rutting season, moving around to find mates and favorable food sources as they prepare for the harsh winter months.

5. Feeding: Elk eat heavily to build up fat reserves. Their diet includes grasses, leaves, and even the bark of trees, though they prefer meadows, where grazing is easy and food is abundant.

These behaviors are essential for the elk’s survival and successful reproduction, showcasing both their strength and their adaptability to Manitoba’s ecosystems.
