The National Library and Information System notes that the British Union Jack was lowered at midnight on August 30, 1962, and the national flag of Trinidad and Tobago was raised for the first time.
Celebrations/Parades: Military-style parades take place at the Queen's Park Savannah in Port of Spain and in Scarborough, Tobago.
Events: Festivities include live music, street marches, the National Awards ceremony at the President's House, and evening fireworks.
Food and Culture: People celebrate with local dishes like pelau and curry goat while enjoying calypso and soca music.
