This past spring I needed a new bed. When I got this bed, over a decade ago, it had “special tools” that came with it to assemble it. Of course, I couldn’t find the “special tools” now that I needed to disassemble it. That’s when I went to Walmart and bought a trusty old crowbar and hammer and then went to work on it. And I’m proud to say,as a blind person, I didn’t hit my hand one time with the hammer as I tore the bed apart.

At the End of the Day is a short novel, written in a free-verse narrative style, that explores the themes of revenge, betrayal, and redemption. When Edgar Lee Downey, a devout Christian, learns of his teenage daughter’s sexual assault, he falls prey to the temptation of revenge. After exacting vengeance on her assailant, he is found guilty of murder and sentenced to death by lethal injection. Downey’s conviction inspires his daughter, Billie Ann, to become a lawyer and fight to commute his sentence of death to life in prison. The narrative unfolds 14 years after the murder, on Monday, August 17, 1998, the day of her father’s scheduled ex*****on. The story largely takes place in Downey’s prison cell in Huntsville, Texas, where he awaits Governor Bush’s decision on whether or not to grant him a stay of ex*****on. In the meantime, Billie Ann ping pongs from her father’s prison cell over to where her mother is now jailed—just a few miles away—charged the previous night with her fifth DWI.
