On this day.. On September 9, 1992, Nirvana performed at the MTV Video Music Awards at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.
MTV initially wanted Nirvana to play "Smells Like Teen Spirit," but the band wanted to play a new, unreleased song called "R**e Me." After a tense standoff, MTV threatened to ban the band from the network entirely if they played it. Compromising at the last minute, Nirvana started the opening chords of "R**e Me" on live television before pivoting into "Lithium."
At the end of the song, bassist Krist Novoselic tossed his bass into the air, and it landed squarely on his head, knocking him out momentarily. Kurt Cobain destroyed his guitar and smashed the band's equipment while drummer Dave Grohl ran to the microphone and repeatedly yelled, "Hi, Axl!" taunting Guns N Roses frontman Axl Rose.
