POV: It’s your first day teaching McCombs School of Business, The University of Texas at Austin!
I was fortunate to spend the past two years lecturing on Athlete-Driven Media and Media Literacy for the Moody College of Communication - UT Austin class “Business of Sports Media” alongside sports biz vets Mark Pannes, Bryan Perez & Mike Cramer. What I did not anticipate was how much I would love the teaching experience — developing a curriculum around areas of personal passion and seeing its impact in real-time was extremely energizing and powerful.
Today, I am super excited to take the reins of my very own class, “Entrepreneurship Practicum: Passion Industries” an elective for upperclassmen in the Entrepreneurship Minor at McCombs, which is part of the Kendra Scott WEL Institute.
As many of you know, I haven’t exactly followed a linear path in my own career, (not sure I’ve ever even labeled myself as an Entrepreneur). But this class is an incredible opportunity to offer a new generation a look at how understanding your passions and priorities in life will always orient you exactly where you need to be in business. We’ll spend the semester developing the critical thinking and skills required to create value in any organization or professional situation, whether focused on new business development within existing companies or as stand-alone ventures.
Massive thank you to Mark, Bryan and Cramer for launching my academic aspirations, Ethan Burris, Melissa Murphy, Stacey Rudnick and Kirk Goldsberry for allowing me to grow into new opportunities at McCombs, and Katherine Rowe and George Fisher for being the consummate examples of how exceptional students can become exceptional colleagues.
Wish me luck!
(and yes, I realize I probably should’ve thrown up a Hook ‘Em instead of the peace sign, but the Wolverine in me can only evolve so much at once 💛💙🧡)
