Feeling lucky to spend time Black Cat Ranch in Elgin 🩷
At the most recent equine life drawing session, I tried a bunch of quick, overlapping blind contour drawings (not looking at the paper and simply observing subject while tracing outlines) using oil pastels. The horses don’t stand still for more than like 15-20 seconds, and I’m used to painting from completely still plastic models.

It’s strange, though… because being at this ranch feels still and tranquil and quiet. Yet the resulting drawings are chaotic. That contradiction between stillness and movement and setting makes me uncomfortable when translating to drawing. But I think that’s a good thing.

It’s been a long while since I’ve done this type of drawing exercise, and it’s hard to share “unrefined” sketches. But, I value the practice of loosening up outside of the realism cling to in my studio work. Feels freeing to let go of that tightness for a moment, and being around living, breathing horses is therapeutic in its own right.

What I notice in these drawing sessions is the soft complexity of horse anatomy. There are so many shapes to follow along their muscles - so these contour outlines became curvy and wild!!
