📖 DUST & DIGNITY – Episode 2: The Town Hears About the Widow

News travels faster than dust storms on the frontier.

By midday, the whole town knew Mabel Harlo was buying flour with Gideon Cross’s money. Or worse — that she’d spent the night in his bunkhouse.

Mabel counted her coins at the general store counter, back straight, while her girls clung to her skirt. She felt the stares before she heard the whispers.

“Poor Gideon,” murmured Mrs. Potts by the canned beans. “Lonely makes a man foolish.”

“Three mouths to feed,” said the shopkeeper, not quite under his breath. “That’s a lot of charity.”

Mabel set the last coin down. “It’s not charity,” she said, loud enough to stop the whispers. “It’s work. I earned this.”

Outside, Gideon was tying his horse to the post. He didn’t come in. Didn’t defend her. Just stood there, hat low, watching the boardwalk like he was waiting for trouble.

He was. Because in a town like this, a woman’s dignity was the first thing people tried to steal.

Those were the nights that raised me. Grateful for dirt roads and slow summers.

What summer memory still lights you up inside?

📖 DUST & DIGNITY – Episode 1: The Morning After Dishes

The sun hadn’t cleared the ridge when Mabel was already at the stove.

The bunkhouse wasn’t much — four cots, a cracked window, dust in every corner. But it had a door that locked and a roof that held. For her girls, it was a palace.

Gideon appeared in the doorway with two buckets of water, saying nothing. He set them down and left. Ten minutes later, he was back with firewood. Still no words.

By noon, Mabel had the bunkhouse swept, the girls fed, and a list of repairs in her head. When Gideon came by to check the fence line, she handed him the list without apology.

He read it slow. “You always this direct?”

“Only when my children’s sleep depends on a roof not leaking,” Mabel said.

Gideon looked at her — really looked — then took the list, folded it, and put it in his vest pocket. “Supplies are in the shed.”

That night, the leak was patched. And for the first time in years, Mabel fell asleep before worry did.
