Meet the Crisper Whisperer
They know your fridge is basically a dating app. Per the Natural Resources Defense Council’s (NRDC) “The Refrigerator Demystified”, up to 40% of food in the U.S. is never eaten and a lot of that comes down to bad matches, not bad food.

Here’s how the Whisperer pairs things up:

Top shelf: the casual zone. Slightly warmer, lower stakes, good for leftovers, drinks, and ready-to-eat stuff like yogurt or cheese.

Bottom shelf: the serious commitment. Coldest spot in the fridge, which is exactly where raw meat, poultry, and fish belong — in a tray, so nothing drips on its neighbors.

The door: a situationship, not a relationship. It’s the warmest part of the fridge and gets a blast of warm air every time it opens. Fine for condiments, a bad match for eggs or anything actually perishable.

High humidity drawer: for veggies prone to wilting — carrots, leafy greens, spinach, broccoli. Low humidity drawer: for fruit and produce that tends to rot — apples, pears, grapes, berries, avocados. Mixing them up is basically a bad set-up.

A couple house rules that keep every match healthy: keep the fridge at 40°F or below (NRDC notes bacteria multiply fastest between 40° and 140°), don’t overfill it (cold air needs room to circulate), and don’t let ice build up (it makes the whole fridge work harder).

Don’t miss the opportunity to hear two amazing communities in Georgia share how they used state recycling grant funds to enhance their programs. Mendie White and Ryan Davis from Gwinnett County will share how they leveraged partnerships, data, and community-focused planning to build a more inclusive recycling network while advancing landfill diversion, sustainability, and environmental stewardship goals. Amy Hartline with Dalton-Whitfield SW Authority will highlight how investments in recycling infrastructure, public education, and community engagement worked together to strengthen their local recycling program.

Meet the Cart Strategist 🛒

These savvy consumers buy only what they’ll actually use. Before they ever get to the store, they check the fridge, freezer, and pantry to see what’s already there. Then they shop with a list, built around that inventory, not around whatever looks good in the aisle.

This one habit eliminates two of the biggest sources of wasted food at once: buying food you already have and buying food with no plan for how it’ll get used.

If gusty winds and rain are in your forecast, make plans to secure your recycling and solid waste containers. Winds can blow recyclables or trash creating litter, and flooding rain can sweep up unsecured containers creating a safety hazard in our streets. Help keep our streets safe for first responders and our solid waste crews by securing your containers.

If strong winds leave limbs and branches in your yard, don’t toss these items in with trash or your recycling. Check locally for the storm debris pick-up schedule or drop-off locations.

Don’t miss this session! Hear Nikhil Balachandran, Zabble, share how technology can play a critical role in operationalizing EPR and organics policy mandates by providing real-time insights into contamination, participation, and behavior at the point of disposal. By adopting technology to identify contamination hotspots, communities can deliver tailored, actionable education directly to residents and businesses and measure program effectiveness. Josh Mastromatto, Rego, will share lessons for using AI analysis to collect reliable data, involve frontline staff and community participants, and turn audit findings into decisions about purchasing, hauling, infrastructure, and education. Attendees will leave with a practical framework for making waste measurement more affordable and scalable while maintaining human quality assurance.
