About Alisha and Just Add Rhythm:

Alisha is a drum circle facilitator whose job is to bring people together through drumming. She is dedicated to utilizing the power of music and movement to help others discover their true healthy selves – and to have lots of fun and be a little playful along the way. In 2003, Alisha picked up her first drum while attending Berklee College of Music. Primarily bei

ng a singer at the time, she thought it would add groove to her vocal abilities. For the next several years, Alisha immersed herself in world music, performing and traveling to Ghana and Senegal in West Africa to study with the cultural masters. Alisha has an M.A. in Ethnomusicology from Tufts University and completed her thesis research in Senegal and in Boston. In 2012 she founded Just Add Rhythm LLC, with the vision of seeing more people drumming for good – for their personal joy and wellness, and for igniting positive change in their communities.. Having fun is serious business, and for the past 14 years Alisha has worked with communities, introducing them to the joy of music and the profoundly positive effect it can have on each and every one of us. Alisha is a member of the Drum Circle Facilitators Guild, is a senior accredited DRUMBEAT facilitator, is trained in the Developmental Community Music (DCM) and Remo Health RHYTHMS® protocols, and is a licensed 40-hour childcare professional with the Florida Department of Children and Families. Over the weekend, I attended the Ringling Brothers circus with my family. It was my two children’s first circus experience—and while they were captivated by the spectacle, I found myself focused on something else: teamwork.
Every part of the show was a reminder of how powerful well-executed collaboration can be.

Some performers did one thing exceptionally well, executing it flawlessly every time. Others brought a broader range of skills, constantly adjusting to timing, movement, and conditions in real time. Both were essential. By the finale, more than 100 performers shared the stage—each playing a clear role, fully aligned toward the same outcome.

The trapeze artists trusted one another completely, timing every move with precision. The clowns delivered humor while quietly demonstrating athletic skill and coordination. The ringleaders read the room, adjusting the energy and keeping the entire performance connected and engaging.

What struck me most was this: whatever happened behind the scenes didn’t matter. What the audience experienced was confidence. We’ve got this. You’re in good hands.

That’s what great teams do.

Imagine a workplace where everyone knows their role, trusts their teammates, and supports one another to deliver something exceptional—where individual strengths are valued, and collaboration turns effort into impact.

That’s not just a great performance.

That’s a great organization.

👏 Well done, Ringling Brothers.

What’s the best example of teamwork you’ve seen recently—onstage or at work?

Yesterday, I had the joy of facilitating two wellness drum circles at the University of North Florida, thanks to their Office of Community Engagement and Partnerships. Both sessions were open to all students and faculty—and the turnout was amazing.

Not only did people show up, but they surprised themselves with how great they sounded together. One of my favorite parts of each session is our closing “pair and share,” where participants reflect with a partner on two things:
1. Their favorite or most impactful moment of the session
2. One takeaway they can apply outside the circle

Some of the most powerful feedback centered on mindfulness. Many shared how the drumming helped quiet their minds and ground them in the present—focused on the rhythm, the circle, and the shared energy. Several noticed how it helped them release nervous energy and leave feeling calmer.
One student stood out: he admitted he almost didn’t attend because he felt shy and unsure. Not only did he stay for the entire first session—he stuck around between sessions to jam with friends and left saying they wanted to start a campus drumming club.

This isn’t just a good feeling—it’s backed by science.

Research shows that drumming can deactivate the body's stress response and even boost immune function by increasing natural killer (NK) cells that help fight illness.

Before we wrapped up, I shared simple, no-drum-needed rhythm exercises that participants can use in daily life to manage stress, improve focus, and feel more connected. Everyone left feeling lighter, calmer, and more in tune—with themselves and their campus community.

Could your team, school, or group use a rhythm refresh? I’d love to bring this experience to your space.
