OMERDA (2022)
When a person speaks the sound, “Om,” there are four parts. The “Ah,” followed by “Ooh,” then “Mm,” and finally, silence.
Try it out yourself!
While Om represents the universe in its entirety, Omerda ties this concept to the modern knowledge of the four states of mind: Pure Consciousness, the Waking state, the Dream state, and the Deep Sleep state. On an island scaped in inspiration of the symbol of Om, these paintings depict landscapes representing the four parts of Om and its correlating states of mind.
I: Pure Consciousness State
Representing the “Ah” of Om, The Pure Consciousness State is “big picture.” Its distance shows no specific details that can be easily recognized, but the viewer is fully aware of the immensity of the subject. The intention is to encapsulate the feeling of mindful meditation, where emotions and thoughts are present, but viewed from a distance as an unbiased spectator.
II: The Waking State
Representing the “Ooh” of Om, the Waking state is where life usually takes place. It is the material world that we know. Our body and minds are active. Progress is made, time ticks on, and the world grows. People and ideas come and go without stopping to think about it.
While humanity does exist within this state more than any, I chose to focus on Nature’s part in the Waking state, while leaving hints of human footprints along the way.
III: The Dream State
Representing the “Mm” of Om, the Dream State of consciousness is where the mind processes unresolved emotions, desires, and experiences from the waking state. Traces of humanity’s footprint are found amongst the ruins, while most colors lie within the sky, symbolizing opportunity, growth, and truth.
IV: The Deep Sleep State
Representing the silence that takes place after the decrescendo of the “Mm” of om, comes the Deep Sleep State. No emotions, desire, or materiality is present, only a peaceful and empty land. The simplicity of the landscape will invoke the feeling of Zen, where nothing exists outside of the mind and oneness is achieved. Mountains reflect a cloudy and looming sky like that of storm clouds hanging over a desert.
A crescent moon with red petrified vines sits partially covered in the sand, representing life and death. The stones on the left also mimic this shape.
A bonsai tree, representing time, stands still in a dormant state.
I'm so incredibly happy to finally be able to show this series in it's whole. Thank you everyone who has helped along the way! 💜
