The Atlanta Jewish Film Festival (AJFF) is a showcase of international cinema that broadly explores themes of identity, history and culture. The annual festival was founded in the year 2000 by the Atlanta Regional Office of American Jewish Committee (AJC), a global advocacy organization that enhances the wellbeing of the Jewish people and Israel through education, outreach and diplomacy. Through t

he power and shared experience of cinematic storytelling, AJC and AJFF foster stronger bonds within the Jewish community, and intergroup relations with Atlanta's diverse cultural, ethnic and religious communities. The inaugural edition of the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival welcomed some 1,900+ filmgoers. That number grew to more than 7,500 by 2006, the same year that AJFF received a prestigious grant from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). The following year, AJFF began an aggressive expansion of dates and venues, seating some 15,000 by 2008. In 2010, AJFF celebrated its tenth birthday with a concert of iconic Jewish film scores, presented in partnership with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Turner Classic Movies. Attendance reached 20,000 by the end of the first decade, and continued growing to over 30,000 moviegoers in the years that followed. By this time, AJFF was exhibiting some 70 narrative and documentary features and shorts, running for 23 days across a half dozen venues throughout metro Atlanta. Already Atlanta's single largest film festival, AJFF made history in 2015 to become the largest Jewish film festival in the world, attracting more than 38,600 moviegoers. Today, AJFF is an independent non-profit arts organization that continues an active partnership with its founding agency, American Jewish Committee.

ATL Jewish Film believes in the power of film to deepen understanding, strengthen community, and create space for meaningful dialogue.

Today, we are sharing our Core Values and Governance Framework, bringing greater clarity and structure to the principles and practices that guide our work.

Our mission—to inspire diverse communities to new levels of social and cultural understanding by showcasing entertaining and thought-provoking Jewish film—has not changed. Neither has our commitment to artistic freedom, independent curatorial judgment, open dialogue, or presenting a broad range of Jewish and Israeli stories, including films that explore complex, challenging, or thought-provoking subjects.

What has changed is the level of clarity and structure surrounding our work. The Core Values articulate the principles that guide ATL Jewish Film, supported by a set of governance frameworks that formalize how we approach programming, help audiences navigate complex content, integrate community input, and set expectations for those who represent the organization publicly.

Together, these measures strengthen accountability and transparency, bring greater rigor and care to decision-making, and preserve the artistic freedom and curatorial independence essential to our mission.

This effort grew from a period of organizational reflection, community dialogue, and governance review led by our Board of Directors and staff leadership. In developing these frameworks, ATL Jewish Film also sought the perspectives of key community partners, including our Founder & Partner, American Jewish Committee Atlanta, the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta, and the Consulate General of Israel to the Southeast. Their feedback helped inform our approach, and we are deeply appreciative of their support for the actions the organization has taken.

Our commitment to living these values and fulfilling our responsibilities as a Jewish cultural institution has only deepened. We value your continued engagement and trust, which we honor through our actions and service to the community.

These steps provide a stronger foundation for ATL Jewish Film's future—one that celebrates Jewish storytelling, supports artists, welcomes diverse audiences, and creates opportunities for conversation and connection.

More than 200 members of our volunteer Film Evaluation Committee have begun screening submissions from around the world, launching the search for the exceptional films that will define the 2027 Atlanta Jewish Film Festival.

Over the coming months, volunteers will review hundreds of narrative features, documentaries, and short films, helping identify the stories that best reflect our mission and connect with audiences. Their passion, diverse perspectives, and dedication help ensure each year's festival showcases outstanding Jewish and Israeli storytelling.

Earlier this month, our team gathered for a three-day staff retreat focused on learning, collaboration, and planning for the future. Through sessions across Atlanta, staff identified new ways to better serve our audiences and community. We are especially grateful to Jamestown L.P. for hosting us at Ponce City Market, where we explored innovative approaches to placemaking and community building, and to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta for welcoming us to learn from its volunteer and foundation leaders. Their generosity and commitment to philanthropy, volunteerism, and community engagement provided valuable insights as we prepare for the 2027 AJFF and continue expanding our year-round impact.

Proud to share that ATL Jewish Film’s Guest Programming Manager, Amy L. Levin, represented us this week at the Jewish Film Presenters Network conference in Toronto, speaking with more than 50 colleagues from Jewish film festivals across the U.S. and Canada.

Amy joined 2026 AJFF Special Guest and filmmaker Mark Selby for a conversation moderated by Isaac Zablocki of the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan, reflecting on the lessons Jewish film presenters have carried over the past year and the care required to serve our communities in a Post-October 7 world.
