🌙 Details of “Moonward”, 48in x 24in

I’ve been wanting to share this piece because there is so much tucked into it that you might not notice at first glance.

I painted three luna moths moving through layers of leaves and foliage, with a large, luminous tear near the bottom corner. The tear is a nod to Elizabeth Bishop’s “The Man-Moth,” and the idea of that single tear being the Man-Moth’s most precious possession really stayed with me.

I also layered pieces of Bishop’s poetry throughout the background, so the words become part of the painting itself. I love the idea that you have to get a little closer and really look to find them, almost like discovering another layer of the story hidden inside the leaves.

For me, Moonward is about longing, transformation, fleeting beauty, and reaching toward something we may never quite be able to touch. And maybe, in the end, about what we carry back with us from the things we aim to reach.

I hope you’ll take a closer look at this one. There are little pieces of the story hiding everywhere. 🤍

Moonward • 48in x 24in, Layered Elizabeth Bishop poetry, oil and acrylic on wood panel

Inspired by Elizabeth Bishop’s “The Man-Moth,” this painting is layered with Elizabeth Bishop poetry and imagines three luna moths moving through a lush, nocturnal world toward the pull of the moon. The moths evoke transformation, impermanence, and the human longing to reach beyond what we can fully understand. The large drop of water is a quiet reference to the Man-Moth’s tear, the one intimate thing he possesses and can ultimately give away. Moonward suggests both the moths’ movement toward the light and our own instinct to pursue what remains just beyond our reach. 🌒

🚨 SPOILER ALERT 🚨 A brilliant book that left me frustrated, emotionally inconvenienced, and somehow still wanting more. 😂 The Calamity Club… I’m not saying I needed a different ending, but I’m also not saying I didn’t. 👀📚 Maybe leaving me this annoyed is a sign of a good read? 🤷🏻‍♀️
