Hemingway was not an Odd Fellow, nor a citizen of New Harmony. He was however a frequent visitor to Albion, IL, more or less a "sister" to New Harmony as long ago as 1800. As a young boy in the early 1900's, Ernest visited Albion with his father Clarence, a physician. Clarence had a sister who lived on a stately farm with her husband, a Bible College president. Yes, Clarence brought his young son to see the marvel of New Harmony, about to celebrate her Centennial. Clarence and Ernest hunted and fished in the area, went riding, and came back as often as his medical practice allowed. Very few know this. So much for all the attention to Hemingway's formative experiences as a youth in Michigan. There's a lot more to this story, but let's talk more tomorrow.

This very rare map was drawn at Economy, PA around 1831, noted to be the New Harmony, IN, Cutoff Island, circa 1824. Harmonists were present, maintaining a "horse and cattle operation". The depicted features, noted in Old German, have never been translated and physically identified. This 3000 acre island, once encircled by the Wabash River, lies southwest of the town, just across the "Cutoff", which word was added to the map at some later date. Today the Cutoff is indeed the Wabash River, and the river flows through it. Standing at today's New Harmony boat ramp looking south 1800' down the river is the island. In the early 1800's you would be looking at a narrow bog, a somewhat swampy area, yet often crossable by horse or wagon. The bog was the mouth of a swift running, rocky bottom stream of clear, cold water, travelling 2 miles and dropping 10' in elevation, powering a mill at the "bottom". As well, your gaze would follow the river flow almost due west, carrying flatboat traffic about 10 miles around the island, in route to the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, laden with cargo bound for New Orleans. In 1800, well before Indiana statehood, a few pioneering settlers hunted and trapped the island's many enchanted forests, cleared and farmed small plots, and traded with local Native Americans. Although rarely mentioned, the island would be of integral importance to both the Harmonist and Owen communities that would arrive in coming years.

This good old girl is finally being rescued! Indiana Landmarks, a non-profit committed to saving historic properties, with the generous support of Jeremy Efroymson, has purchased the Odd Fellow Building, otherwise known as the old grocery store directly across from Ribeyre Gymnasium. This is a very important site where a red brick Harmonist building once stood, converted to the original Odd Fellow Lodge on November 11, 1850. The Owen men were devoted members and leaders. Several future uses are being considered, including a visitor center and historical exhibit, as well as a reborn fully functioning Odd Fellow Lodge.
