After 69 years of marriage, my husband left me nothing in his will — then his lawyer handed me a letter that began, "This was my plan. Now I have to tell you the truth."
My husband, Walter, recently passed away. We had been married for 69 years.
We'd been together since college. Three children. Five grandchildren. I was genuinely happy.
When he died, it felt like a piece of my heart had been ripped out. I thought nothing could hurt more — until one day.
That day, Walter's lawyer asked the entire family to come in for the reading of the will.
He said Walter had left money to charity. His cabin went to his sister. His investments were divided among our children and grandchildren.
Then came the sentence I still remember word for word:
"To my wife, Eleanor, I leave NO assets under this will."
I couldn't speak.
After 69 years, after raising our children together, after sitting beside his bed during his final months, I couldn't understand why Walter would do this to me.
When everyone else left, the lawyer asked me to stay behind and said:
"Actually, your husband did leave something for you."
He handed me an envelope with a letter inside.
The first lines made me hold my breath:
"My love, if you're reading this, then everyone now believes I left you nothing. That's exactly what I needed EVERYONE TO BELIEVE."
My stomach twisted as I kept reading:
"You need to know THE TRUTH about me. All my life, I had to hide this terrible secret from you to protect you. I did leave you SOMETHING. Don't trust my sister, and please read this carefully all the way to the end."
When I finished reading the letter, I still couldn't believe WHAT IT SAID.
