Big Momma Quilts Welcome to BigMommaQuilts.com
We make customized personal quilts: t-shirt quilts, memory quilts, baby Hi! I’m Sonya Morgan, otherwise known as “Big Momma”.

I received the nickname when I was pregnant with my first child. I love quilting. I love fabric. All quilters and seamstresses know how hard it is to pass up a piece of fabric. I have been sewing for over 30 years. I began with clothing and moved on to quilts about 15 years ago. In my years of sewing, I have made prom dresses, men’s suits, wool coats, bridesmaid dresses, and almost every type of daily wear clothing. Around the home, I have sewn pillow covers and window treatments. My love is quilting. Please take a look at my quilt gallery to see my handiwork. I mostly piece and quilt on the machine. I have completed many crafts by hand – cross stitch, needlepoint, and some quilt hand piecing. T-shirt quilts are a charming keepsake for any age. I love to collect and arrange t-shirts and fabric. I love a versatile quilt, so I use more than one fabric when possible, and often throw in some quilt squares or arrangements to diversify and liven up the quilt. I find that most t-shirt quilts are made to be used, not displayed. It is for this reason that I machine quilt each t-shirt and all the fabric and sashing surrounding the t-shirt blocks.

From Clothing Design to 20 Years of Long-Arm Mastery
I started making my own clothes 30 years ago. Quilting stole my heart.

Crafting garments taught me structure, fit, and movement. But quilting gave me legacy. Every stitch on Elizabeth, my TinLizzie 16, turns fabric into a living story that warms families long after we are gone.

The Memory Quilt Mistake That Ruins Loved Ones’ Clothes
Do not cut grandma’s sweaters without using knit interfacing first.

T-shirts and sweaters stretch out of shape the moment your rotary cutter hits them. Fusable woven interfacing locks the stretch so you can piece memory quilts without puckering. Here is the step-by-step prep guide.

Stop Buying Cheap Thread for Heirloom Quilts
Bargain thread will ruin your $200 quilt top in five years.

Cheap thread sheds lint that jams your machine, snaps under tension, and rots over time. Invest in 50wt 100 percent long-staple cotton for piecing and long-arm work. It keeps Elizabeth running smooth and ensures your heirloom lasts generations.

Tap save so you remember what thread to buy at the shop, or DM me THREAD for my recommended list.

30 Years of Sewing Taught Me This One Ironing Secret
Pressing is not ironing. If you drag your iron, you destroy your piecing.

Ironing stretches bias edges. Pressing sets seams. Down, hold, up. Slide 1 breaks down press vs drag. Slide 2 shows the wooden clapper trick for flat seams. Slide 3 shows seam allowance direction. Send this to a friend who fights wavy borders.

Send this to your sewing buddy who needs flatter seams, then tap my profile to book a 1-on-1 lesson.

Why Your Quilt Seams Match at the Top But Fail at the Bottom

Stop blame sewing on your feed dog. You are pulling your fabric without knowing it.

Tension matters, but friction rules. When you feed two pieces through your machine, the bottom layer moves faster because of the feed dogs. If you do not pin every 2 inches or use a walking foot, your top layer stretches. Save this quick check before your next block assembly.

Save this post for your next project, or DM me tension to troubleshoot your machine setup.

"I spent 10 years making custom clothes, until one basket of scrap fabric changed my life."

Clothing design taught me structure, fit, and how fabric drapes, but quilting gave me a canvas for raw color and emotional connection. Over 20 years ago, I gathered leftover garment scraps to stitch a throw quilt for my family. Holding that finished piece unlocked a deep calling to create lasting keepsake quilts that hold stories, warmth, and culture.

"If your quilt binding twists on the corners, you made this cutting mistake."

Straight grain binding strips have zero stretch, making them ideal for square edge quilts, but terrible for rounded corners. When binding scalloped or curved edges, you must cut your fabric strips on a true 45 degree bias. The bias stretch allows the fabric to wrap fluidly over the quilt edge without a single pucker or twist.

Save this post to review when you reach your binding stage, and send a DM with "CLASS" for hands-on instruction.
