As our summer camps have been in full swing, our Artistic Director has been busy this summer Guest Directing, Coaching, Casting, and Talent Scouting for regional and national theaters, performing arts programs, production companies, and schools.

She will be on location for the last two weeks of MTC camps leading master classes for both PLAYFEST! and TEEN INTENSIVE.

Here are a few of her constructive criticism /feedback tips and observations from the other side of the audition table and insights from the casting table:

"After another week of casting calls, live auditions, and evaluating more taped auditions than my eyes and ears can take in, here is my advice/constructive criticism for "auditioners" of any & every age:

1- THE SCRELT- No one likes or enjoys a screaming belt. STOP SCRELTING! It is only cute and tolerable on 8 yrs old and under. You also will permanently damage your vocal folds.

2. STOP SCREAMING AT US. We don't like it and neither will your audience. Remember we are the ones casting you. STOP SHOUTING when you perform your sides and songs. I see this WAY too much in Teens. Note to Teens- there is still time for you- don't be Johnny One Notes. Think long-term past your "cute-I-do-one-thing-really-well" stage!

3. HAVE FUN! Free your imagination and sense of child-like wonder/play! Please sing with lyricism, color and inflection. Bring and infuse life to your song. Ditto for monologues- review your objectives please. Be committed- fully believe in what you are doing and saying!!!!

4. We, on the casting side of things, champion performers. WE WANT YOU TO SUCCEED! We are cheering you on…but sometimes a handful make that a bit more challenging, so remember: You are not all that. Stay humble. Stay professional. Your reputation is everything. Be kind, courteous, flexible, and gracious at all times. (Be super courteous to your stage managers and receptionists!)

5. Stay positive! You may not be right for this part, but you may have made an excellent impression for future part consideration!

6. Train, train, train, prepare, prepare, prepare, practice, practice, practice. You can be the most talented person ever but if you aren't fully prepared for an audition or working on technique/voice/movement/etc. you come off like an amateur and/or aren't showing any growth/depth/maturity etc... in your work

6. On- Camera TV/Film acting… LESS IS MORE. I REPEAT LESS IS MORE……..seriously your eyebrows are like caterpillars on tape, stop moving so much.

7. Take everything with a grain of salt (including the above list), nothing is personal, keep a thick skin and an open heart and remember, "All's Well that Ends Well!"
