In 1990, Joe Clay, Clay Hine, Rick LaRosa, and Pookie (he was actually still just Jared Carlson then), were all a part of the Big Chicken Chorus, and had a great time hanging out together. At that point, Joe was singing tenor, Jared was singing lead, and in between LOTS of goofy times, we sang a bit after chorus rehearsal. We had so much fun doing that that we thought we’d start a quartet and continue the goofiness. Joe moved to bass, Jared moved to tenor, and after eliminating “The Bagel 4” and “Fully Krausened” as potential names, Brad Hine said “why don’t you just call yourselves FRED?” Not surprisingly, that name was available, and we were off to the races.
Here we are 33 years later - we’ve sung and laughed together in 2023 and just had a great time at the BHS International Convention performing on our first AIC show since 2011. We also loved celebrating Revival’s 25th anniversary of winning it all (and yes, WE most definitely care about Revival!), and with that, FRED is gearing up for July 2024 and our 25th anniversary of winning our gold medals. Over the next year or so, we’re looking forward to spending more time singing together, hanging out, being extremely silly, and remembering some epically amazing times…and we look forward to creating some great new memories! We’ll use this FRED Reunion page to post some photos, stories, and info about any performances people might be crazy enough to book us for…and with that, if you might be interested in having FRED bring some silliness to a performance in your area, please reach out to one of us (Facebook messenger, text, email, or carrier pigeon).
