Planning for a Day That May Never Come

We save the good dishes.

Wait for the perfect moment.

Promise ourselves we’ll rest
when things slow down,
laugh more
when the work is done,
love louder
when the timing is right.

We build entire lives
around a tomorrow
that has not introduced itself.

Calendars fill.

Savings grow.

Dreams are postponed
and joy is placed
on layaway.

All while today
sits quietly at the table,
waiting to be noticed.

How much of a life
is spent preparing to live it?

How many sunsets
are traded for schedules?

How many embraces
are shortened
by the next item on the list?

There is wisdom in planning.

But there is also loss
in believing tomorrow
is guaranteed.

The future deserves preparation.

The present deserves participation.

And somewhere between the two
is the life we keep meaning to live.

A life that was never waiting
for tomorrow to begin.

Soil was inspired by my bestie, Matthew Flournoy, whose words made me think about strength, resilience, and the foundation that supports us through life.

This poem honors the quiet power beneath the surface—the part of us that carries our stories, withstands challenges, and continues to help new things grow.

𝘣𝘺 𝘋𝘦𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘳

Stay with me
when my voice forgets its strength.

Keep your place
when my hands loosen their grip
on what I said I would hold.

Do not leave
when I move slower than I should,
when doubt settles in
like it belongs here.

Remind me;
not loudly,
not with shame,
but with presence;
that I am still capable
of becoming what I named.

Meet me
in the small returns,
in the quiet decisions
that no one else sees.

Let me come back to you
without fear
of what I have not done.

And when I stand
uncertain and unfinished,

teach me
how to remain.
