I can usually tell how dependent a business is on its leader by asking one question:
“What happens when you unexpectedly take the day off?”
And I don’t mean you scheduled a day off three weeks ago, moved your meetings, finished your deliverables, and gave everybody a heads up.
I mean your kid wakes up sick.
Your internet goes out.
You have a family emergency.
Or you simply wake up one morning and realize you do NOT have it in you today.
What happens to the business then?
Because there was a point when my answer would’ve been, “Well…a lot of stuff just isn’t getting done.” 😭
And THAT is part of what changed the way I think about systems.
I needed more than automations connecting one tool to another.
I needed my decisions documented, so recurring work would have a home outside of my brain.
I needed someone else to be able to look at what was happening and know what came next.
All of that HAD to be built before I was desperate for it.
That last part matters.
Trying to document a process while you’re actively drowning in it is a very different experience than sitting down on a random Tuesday and saying, “Okay, how do I make sure I never have to be the only person who knows how to do this again?”
So if you’ve been thinking about systems lately, start there.
Pick ONE thing your business currently depends on you to remember, explain, or manually move forward every single time.
Document it.
That’s a system.
And that one little system might buy you a random Tuesday off someday 😂
But I also know one of the hardest parts of getting things out of your head is figuring out how to explain them in a way somebody else can actually execute.
That’s exactly why I built the Delegation Translator.
You give it the messy, in-your-head version of what needs to happen, and it helps you turn it into clear instructions you can actually hand off.
Comment DELEGATE and I’ll send it to you.
