𝗪𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁 and still miss the people who made it possible.

I’ve been sitting with that thought. It’s easy to celebrate what got done. But I also want to ask 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻.

Did they have a voice? Did they get to use their strengths? Did they grow along the way?

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆?

I’ve thought a lot about serving with love and kindness. This question challenged me to go a step further: 𝗔𝗺 𝗜 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲?

We can bring experience, resources, and the best intentions. Yet the people affected by our decisions know things we can only learn by listening.

𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿?

My Auntie corrected teenage me in a way I’ve never forgotten. 😏

I was helping her feed people who were homeless when one gentleman asked for a particular piece of chicken. I thought he should just be grateful. She reminded me that needing help didn’t take away his right to a choice or an opinion.

That lesson reaches far beyond that moment. 𝗔𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆?

As I reflect on the past 12 months of developing leaders and building A1:8 Small Groups, I am grateful not only for what was built, but also for how it was built.

Three leadership principles became especially clear:

📌 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗼. Even mature and veteran leaders need places where they can be vulnerable, receive care, and be strengthened—not simply equipped to care for everyone else.

📌 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴. Our pastors entrusted people with meaningful responsibility, gave us room to lead, and remained present throughout the process.

📌 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱. 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲.

Model what you want multiplied. Prospective leaders experienced the kind of community they would eventually be asked to create.

They reported valuing the fellowship, open discussion, leadership modeling, practical facilitation, and “on-the-job training.” They were able to test ideas, receive feedback, make adjustments, and grow before assuming responsibility for others.

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺.

What does “We got you” actually look like?

It looks like having someone you can call when questions arise. It looks like leaders who pray, encourage, support, and walk alongside people. It looks like entering a group and discovering that you are not merely another name on a roster—you are seen, valued, and welcomed.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟮 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀, 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽𝘀. But the clearest picture of this ministry’s impact comes from the people who experienced it.

✅They found support they could count on.
✅They encountered coaches who became family.
✅They shared meals, laughter, prayer, honest conversations, and meaningful moments with people who chose to show up for one another.

This is the community we prayed for: not perfect people, but present people.

People willing to say:

I see you.
God loves you.
We got you.

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝘀, 𝗕𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗗 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧.

We often celebrate what was launched. But what lasts is usually determined by what was developed before the launch.

Over the past 12 months, we didn’t simply form A1:8 Small Groups. We built a pathway designed to prepare people to lead with confidence, care, and conviction. They were equipped, supported, and given opportunities to grow—from participants into leaders, and from leaders into people capable of developing other leaders.

𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝘆 𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗱. It is built by developing people who can carry the vision, protect the culture, care for others, and multiply what has been entrusted to them.

Today, we can see the fruit in the Small Groups that have formed, the leaders who have stepped forward, and the relationships that continue to deepen.

Whether you are building a ministry, team, business, or organization, your vision will only travel as far as the people you prepare to carry it.

𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴, “H𝗼𝘄 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵?” 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴:

One year ago today, I said yes to the assignment of launching A1:8 Small Groups.

What existed then as a vision has become a living community where people are making friends, becoming disciples, praying for one another, and discovering what it means to be truly seen, loved, and supported.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝘀.

It takes pastors who entrust and cover the assignment. Leaders who develop other leaders. People willing to grow before they lead. Small Group leaders who open their hearts, homes, and lives. And participants who keep showing up for one another in fellowship, discipleship, prayer, and care.

During this first 12-month period, I have watched potential leaders become prepared leaders. I have seen new leaders continue saying yes. I have witnessed leaders carry one another spiritually and Small Groups develop identities of their own while remaining connected to something bigger.

Pausing to acknowledge the past 365 days is not simply a celebration of what was built. It is a celebration of everyone who helped build it—and every person who found a place to belong within it.

𝗧𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀, 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺, 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗱, 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱, 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆: 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲.

This is what “I see you. God loves you. We got you.” looks like.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆—a𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴. ❤️

You can be ready for your next chapter and still have meaningful work to do in this one.

I’ve been reflecting on Philippians 4:12, where Paul describes learning contentment in different circumstances. There is a leadership lesson here, too.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆. 𝗜𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝘆𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲.

It means being fully present while you discern and take your next steps.

Sometimes we become so focused on the next opportunity that we overlook what is available today:

A relationship we can strengthen.
A lesson we can carry forward.
A contribution that could make someone else’s path easier.

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱—b𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄.

Where you are is not necessarily where you will remain. You can still lead with intention while you are there.

Leadership is an inside job.

Have you ever walked away from an experience and realized it affected you more than you thought?

Maybe it changed your mood. Your tone. Your patience. The way you showed up with the next person.

We can’t control every experience or every person’s behavior—but we are responsible for what we allow to take root within us.

Because 𝘂𝗻𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽.

Frustration becomes our tone.
Disappointment becomes defensiveness.
Fear becomes control.
And before we know it, someone else’s ugly is showing up in us.

That’s why 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲, 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻.

Before leading the room, tend to the room within you.

Ask yourself:

What is happening within me?
What is it producing through me?
Is it shaping me into the leader I want to become?

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱.

Strong leaders steward their inner lives so pressure doesn’t decide who they become.

Four weeks of stories.
