IMPORTANT MESSAGE
In 2016 I started with and my colleagues and I successful helped over 1k homeless in New York City and for years tapped into different communities in and the and began educating our own youth on why MLK day is important. I’m so proud of this! work is important but RECOGNIZING MLK DAY is more important as a black woman in corporate America. I will always recognize MLK day because that’s how I was raised 💯

Unfortunately this was never fully adopted by Steelcase despite annual efforts to recognize MLK day as a day on not a day off. In fact, we didnt even get the day off until this year. We worked.

I say this to say that MLK day is important in the black community and here’s why 👇🏽

was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983 (over 10 years later) and it was first observed 3 years after that. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday—giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays 🥸 It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000 ‼️This happens to be the ONLY federal holiday dedicated to serving your community. This has nothing to do with being black and everything to do with getting to know your neighbors and loving eachother.

4 years ago today, the Mayor of New York declared NOVEMBER 2nd ‘Howard Jordan Day’. On November 2nd 1983, President Reagan signed a bill declaring a national holiday, creating MLK Day on the third Monday of January. MLK Day was the first federal holiday honoring an African American. This was a big day for us ✊🏽. A bill we fought to get passed. It is an honor to celebrate ‘Howard Jordan Day’ on this day, a day in my fathers name recognizing him for all of his hard work and commitment to our community. For decades, my father has served the community of helping so many people. My hero. My father really goes above and beyond to help and serve others!!! ❤️ Do something nice tomorrow, share a smile with a stranger, spread good vibes, help someone in need. Be a good human. 🙏🏽
