Revered Joyce McDonald’s art practice is a spiritual practice of testimony. She uses sculptures, painting, poetry, and song to help people process pain and find healing. Her work as an activist and advocate includes founding an HIV awareness and creative arts group for young girls and teens, working with women in shelters and hospitals, writing letters to incarcerated women, coordinating her church’s AIDS ministry, and serving as assistant director of its children’s choir. Moved by God’s direction, McDonald’s terracotta portrait, “Our Lives Mattered (Breonna),” is a memorial to Breonna Taylor and part of a series made to honor victims of racial violence. Created in her home kitchen/art studio, this intimate portrait allowed Reverend McDonald to “touch” Bronna’s spirit as her likeness was crafted with air dry clay, acrylic paint, a fake eyelash, and glitter.

“Our LIves Mattered (Breonna)” was presented in last Spring’s auction, Formation: Bodies in Contemporary Art.

In the wake of our most recent auction”In Support of Women,” we wanted to take a look at the progress Greenhouse has made since launching. Across six auctions, we’ve featured 115 artists and 15 galleries, giving them a platform to connect with over 41,000 unique website visitors from 102 different countries. Through this process, Greenhouse has raised a combined amount of over $185,000 for nonprofits, from the Thurgood Marshall College Fund to the ACLU of Texas.

Today, we’re throwing it back to last spring, when we proudly collaborated with .art and presented ’s photograph “All American Girls.” The work is part of a series of self-portraits that uses found textiles and to articulate personal history. This image centers a Black woman (the artist herself) surrounded by a decorated fabric featuring white pin-up girls. Exploring the Black American middle class, this image pulls from the artist’s own experience of suburbia, being one of few Black girls in a predominately white school but going home to a Black neighborhood. This photographic work adds to Brown’s oeuvre as a writer, curator, and researcher investigating the implications of Americana on Black women.

One hour to go until lots go live for “In Supporting Women - Social Impact Auction: Planned Parenthood & ACLU!” In lot 3, Tunisian-based artist Ghada Chamma explores slowness, detail, and concentration through painting, particularly in response to the arduous transition period of great socio-economic and political instability following the Tunisian Revolution. Ghada composes her work using small details and slow movements, often directed by the rhythm of breath. Taking the time to foster vital energy around her allows Ghada to push back against the chaotic speed and efficiency of everyday life, creating beauty from simplicity. Chamma’s piece, “Moléculaire I,” appears in our upcoming auction, “In Support of Women - Social Impact Auction: Planned Parenthood & ACLU.”

There are only a few hours left before lots go live for “In Support of Women - Social Impact Auction: Planned Parenthood & ACLU” at 2PM today!

While the Texas Senate Bill 8 has been temporarily blocked, it is unclear how long the block will remain in effect. If it is lifted, anyone who has been been involved in performing an abortion can be sued retroactively by ANY individual.

According to Planned Parenthood, there are 7 million women of child-bearing age in TX whose reproductive rights have been violated, and 25 million total across the US who risk losing access to their right to choose. These laws disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, including women of color and undocumented immigrants, through a legacy of institutionalized discrimination. This law serves as a blueprint for how states can take away rights, even if they are protected, and this impacts all of us.

Now’s the time to act, which is why all of the proceeds from “In Support of Women - Social Impact Auction: Planned Parenthood & ACLU!,” directly benefit these organizations and their work to combat Texas Senate Bill 8.

The work of Atlanta-based artist depicts themes of isolation, Black consciousness, and identity, often using allegorical representation and symbolism. Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, Marshall’s art pays homage to her personal experiences surrounding the African diaspora. Marshall uses the work’s title, “Wool I” to symbolize the displacement created by the wool trade, which was historically channeled through the Caribbean. “Wool I” appears in our upcoming auction, “In Support of Women - Social Impact Auction: Planned Parenthood & ACLU.”

Marshall explains that her piece deals with identity and self acceptance issues that women face, especially taking control over their identity. The painting serves as a commentary on standards that society dictates for women and simultaneously works to exhibit the strength and resiliency of women.

Last night, a federal judge temporarily blocked the enforcement of Texas Senate Bill 8, citing a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion. While this is good news, the fight to protect reproductive rights is far from over, and it is unclear how long this block will remain in effect. Now, more than ever, it is essential to support organizations working to help women in Texas - and all over the country – by defending them from the unlawful ban on abortions past six weeks. All of tomorrow’s auction proceeds directly benefit Planned Parenthood and the ACLU, and there is only ONE day left to bid early and register.
