Smaugust Day 28: Dragon of Decay

Can you spot all of the hidden critters?

Every year in recent memory August has been all about creating dragons. Between Dragon Con in Atlanta (one of the shows always on our yearly roster) and Smaugust, there is no getting away from making giant fantasy lizards. I wouldn’t have it any other way!

That said, because of Smaugust, I have always been tight on time to create a grand piece for the Dragon Con Art show. I have wanted to finish a massive piece for the show for quite a while now, so this year I devoted the bulk of my August to this one piece. At 22x 30 inches and framed to 29x29 inches-it’s really massive! It will also have a few surprise elements at Dragon Con, so I can’t wait for everyone to see it in person!

Dragon of Decay is a love letter to the often overlooked and ostracized. Decay is so commonly viewed as morbid and I wanted to turn that idea on its head by painting something vibrant and teeming with life.

I hope you all are excited by the final piece! I can’t wait to share more about it!

I can’t believe that after months of hard work behind the scenes, the campaign for our limited release Luna moth dragon plush is coming to and end in just 5 days!

Thank you to everyone who has already supported the project. Without your belief if this cutie, we wouldn’t be where we are now. What started as a drawing back in 2020 has turned into a real, huggable toy and for that I’m floored.

I wanted to make sure everyone sees this guy who might want to order it because once the order period is completed, it won’t be manufacture again. This ensures that each plush is crafted in small quantities for those that really want one.

I’m working on the next dragon in this series, which will be unveiled later this week for ‘Smaugust’.
The first environment dragon was ‘Coral’ and the next was ‘Succulent’. Any guesses what the third will be (patrons will know)?

While on the subject of Luna Moths, here’s another look at Luna Moth Kitty from earlier this year.

I’m insanely hard at work on my largest dragon painting to date (I have WIPS up on P@treon) but that means I’ve stalled out on Smaugust sketches. Not to worry though! I’m still planning on finishing all of the prompts- it will just take me longer!

She made it off the page. 🥹

Years ago, this Luna Moth Dragon became the creature that started my entire moth-and-butterfly dragon series! I created her with watercolor and colored pencil, never imagining that one day I would actually be able to hold her.

Together with Gimme Swag, we transformed her into my first official collectible plush, complete with layered, shapeable wings, poseable antennae, and embroidered details that glow in the dark!

Thanks to all of you, she’s already fully funded! Preorders remain open worldwide for a little over one more week through August 31, so if you’d like her to perch beside your desk, bookshelf, or favorite reading chair, you can still get yours!

Smaugust Day 9: Irridescent

I’m a few days behind on posting for Smaugust, but as I am hoping to take my time this year with the prompts, I’m not overly concerned with having every day finished on time. I’d rather be happy with the sketches and designs than rush too much.

The irridescent prompt is one that I had been particularly excited about, and I know evertually will warrant a larger illustration. I’ve even toyed with finishing my Andarna painting from last year (but we’ll see where the rest of the year takes me)
