While exact official figures are not published, participant estimates from the 2026 "The People's Artist" contest hosted by Johnny Depp indicate there were over 2,000 groups consisting of 70 to 100 artists each. This structure suggests an estimated (150,000) to (200,000) artists originally entered the competition.

Aspen Highlands has always been a mountain with a little extra character, steeper, wilder, and filled with the kind of skiers who thought a good day wasn’t measured by comfort but by stories worth telling afterward.

Growing up on Highlands meant learning the rhythms of the mountain season by season, from early powder mornings to spring afternoons when the whole hill seemed to glow in the Colorado sun. And when snowboarding began making its way into the valley, it was the determination of local pioneers like the Snowboard Brothers of Aspen that helped open minds and lift gates.

While many resorts across the country were still uncertain about the new sport, Highlands earned a reputation for welcoming innovation and adventure, giving snowboarders a place to carve their own lines and become part of Aspen’s mountain culture. Looking back, it wasn’t just about a new way to ride downhill, it was another chapter in the mountain’s long tradition of embracing people who saw the slopes a little differently and had the courage to try something new.

The Aspen Food & Wine Festival is rolling back into the valley soon, bringing with it that special kind of mountain magic where good food, good wine, and good company all seem to meet beneath the wide Colorado sky. There’s a feeling in the air when Aspen comes alive like this, sunlight on the peaks, laughter in the streets, and that easy rhythm of people gathering to celebrate life at altitude. This fun illustration is a little love letter to that spirit, capturing the joy, color, and warmth of a town that knows how to savor a moment as much as a meal. It’s a reminder that up here, surrounded by the Rockies, celebration feels a little closer to the heart of the earth and a little closer to the heart of each other.

And now in local news!

Hello,

All other Roaring Fork Valley municipalities are water restrictions, most notably Aspen and we are still in springtime. Assuming there will be a decent monsoon season this year, harvested storm water could be collected and sold to them, and stored for future water shortages and snowmaking. Their economic survival is yours. If Aspen becomes another Leadville that won’t bode well for Glenwood Springs visitation.

I’m sure Aspen One, locally invested ditch companies, and local vested global 1% types have the funds and the desire to do a PPP project to ensure the continued survival of Aspen and therefore the survival of the Roaring Fork region.

Cheers
Greg Majersky
