We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
— T.S. Eliot, Four Quartets

Some boys are broken before the story starts.
Alex carries his dead mother's bag through a town that wants him erased. Chad wears his father's expectations like armor and destroys what he can't afford to want.
Chad started breaking Alex the week he arrived. Not because he hates him. Because wanting him is the one thing that could break everything else.
When something between them finally breaks, they run. Past the trails. Into the darkness that has been patiently waiting.
The forest has taken them.
They will come home changed. The question is whether anyone — including themselves — will recognize what comes back.

"We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time."
—T.S. Eliot, "Four Quartets"

For sixteen-year-old Alex Williams, drawing impossible creatures in the margins of his notebooks is the only escape from a small town that doesn't want him. Black, gay, and grieving his mother's death, Alex has become the target of Chad Morrison—the golden boy whose perfect life is its own kind of prison.

But when their toxic dance of bully and victim explodes into violence, both boys flee into the mist-shrouded forests of the Pacific Northwest, where they discover that the only way out is through—through fear, through change, through an impossible door that leads to a world where transformation is the price of survival.

In this haunting dark fairy tale about identity and becoming, two boys who couldn't be more different must rely on each other to navigate a realm that defies explanation. What they bring back—if they make it back—will challenge everything about who they are and who they're meant to become. A novel in three parts that mirrors Eliot's journey of exploration, transformation, and return.

Through the Unknown, Remembered Gate asks: What if getting lost was the only way to truly be found? And what if the person you're running from is the only one who can help you survive the journey home?

For anyone who's ever felt like they were living in the wrong world.

Scale and Ckaw is my love letter to Hip Hop, to social justice and community. I wrote this because I did see many book written for or about or by African Americans in the fantasy genre….

When magnificent creatures suddenly appear in the skies above Chicago's South Side, sixteen-year-old Marcus Robinson thinks he's just documenting an amazing phenomenon for his school project. But when he discovers his grandfather's hidden journal, Marcus learns the shocking truth: dragons have been secretly connected to his community for generations, existing only in whispered stories and faded quilting patterns until now.

As a Dragon Speaker, Marcus can communicate directly with these ancient protectors—but the government's Department of Dragon Affairs sees dragons not as partners, but as weapons to be controlled. Armed with his camera that captures more than the eye can see and his family's dragon grooming business as ground zero for resistance, Marcus uncovers a conspiracy spanning centuries. The government hasn't just been watching his community—they've been hunting the bond between dragons and the people who remember the old ways.

When Operation Harvest threatens to sever the dragon-human connection permanently, Marcus must embrace his dangerous inheritance before everything his ancestors died to protect is lost forever. From community elders who weave protection spells into everyday quilts, to underground chambers where dragons once guided escaped slaves to freedom, Marcus learns that some magic is too powerful to control—and too precious to surrender.

But some bonds cannot be broken. Some truths cannot be buried. And when a teenager's documentary might be the only thing standing between freedom and control, Marcus discovers that the greatest magic isn't in the dragons themselves—it's in the unbreakable connections between those who refuse to forget.

This is more than a story about dragons. This is a story about remembering who you are when the world wants you to forget.
