See how to cut the warp on a more detailed loom and the weft to weave into it! Fancy words for a fun activity.
PRO TIPS:
- Say or sing “over the mountain and under the sea, symmetry makes a weaving prettyyy”! You’re welcome 😂
- Measure every 1/2 inch to create your loom and weft strips
- Wondering why I cut the first 1/2 inch all the way off? Creates an ODD number on the loom so there is an exact middle for ya & then the weft strips fit right, side to side
- Once you reach the middle, mirror your design to the other end
- Try different patterns and see what you can create!
Always remember: let yourself breathe and try it out. It’s all about learning, problem solving, trying your best, and thinking outside the box, NOT being perfect. That’s the Ms. Dolinger way!
See how to create and layer different ground lines and details with a panda! This one’s for Brianna (one of our favorite young DIYers)!
PRO TIPS:
- Have your kiddos experiment with creating different textures: zigzags, bending, and fringe
- Remind them to use their helper hand to turn the paper, not their scissors
- Use “little baby alligator bites” when cutting, not big chomps!
- Cut “big chip, little chips” in the corners to make curved edges. Easiest way to turn a square into a circle, and rectangle into an oval
- Encourage your kids to add more details and talk about how their artwork doesn’t have to look exactly like my example! It’s always better when they make it their own
And always remember: let your kiddos try it themselves and be creative. It’s all about learning, problem solving, trying your best, and thinking outside the box, NOT being perfect. That’s the Ms. Dolinger way!
See how to use two strips of paper to create something fascinating! How far can you make it launch? 🚀
PRO TIPS:
- Make sure the two strips create a 90 degree angle (more math connections!)
- Keep the cat stairs in your hands the same way, don’t rotate them!
- Take the paper from underneath and fold it over the paper on top (easiest if using two different colors)
- Make them even longer by adding extra strips of paper!
Always remember: let your kiddos try it themselves and be creative. It’s all about learning, problem solving, trying your best, and thinking outside the box, NOT being perfect. That’s the Ms. Dolinger way!
See how to use both 2D and 3D techniques to create a sandcastle at the beach 🏖
PRO TIPS:
- Have your kiddos experiment with creating different techniques: curling, fringe, rolling
- Start with a cylinder to create different forms! Flatten, then pop open and flatten again in a new spot for a rectangular prism!
- Encourage your kids to add more details and talk about other things they might find at the beach! What else could they add to or around their sandcastle?
Always remember: let your kiddos try it themselves and be creative. It’s all about learning, problem solving, trying your best, and thinking outside the box, NOT being perfect. That’s the Ms. Dolinger way!
Let’s get 3D! See how to create a tree from a paper bag! You’ll never look at lunch the same way 😂
PRO TIPS:
- Cut fringe on the side of the bag that opens or “is the entrance to the cave”
- Using your fingers to measure is quick and easy, but if you want to incorporate some math, grab a ruler and measure every 1/2 inch
- Use “little baby alligator bites” when cutting, not big chomps!
- “Give your tree a hug” from the shorter sides of the bag to help start making the trunk
- Pinch and twist branches tightly with 2-3 strands from trunk to end
- Encourage your kids to add more details! Talk about the different seasons and what they might find below, in, and above the tree!
Always remember: let your kiddos try it themselves and be creative. It’s all about learning, problem solving, trying your best, and thinking outside the box, NOT being perfect. That’s the Ms. Dolinger way!
Project No. 3: ANIMAL HABITAT
See how to create and layer different ground lines and details for a landscape. Then add an elephant! More animals coming soon 🐼
PRO TIPS:
- Have your kiddos experiment with creating different textures: tearing, crinkling, curling, and fringe
- Remind them to use their helper hand to turn the paper, not their scissors
- Use “little baby alligator bites” when cutting, not big chomps!
- Cut “big chip, little chips” in the corners to make curved edges. Easiest way to turn a square into a circle, and rectangle into an oval
- Encourage your kids to add more details and talk about other things they might find in different types of landscapes
Always remember: let your kiddos try it themselves and be creative. It’s all about learning, problem solving, trying your best, and thinking outside the box, NOT being perfect. That’s the Ms. Dolinger way!
Project No. 2: SHAPE MAN
See how to cut different lines for a background and place shape man in a funny pose!
PRO TIPS:
- Have your kiddos experiment with cutting different types of lines: straight, curved, and zig zag for the background
- Remind them to use their helper hand to turn the paper, not their scissors
- Use “little baby alligator bites” when cutting, not big chomps!
- Cut “big chip, little chips” in the corners to make curved edges. Easiest way to turn a square into a circle, and rectangle into an oval
- Have your kiddos act out different poses before glueing shape man down and talk about all the places the body can bend: elbows, ankles, hips, etc
Always remember: let your kiddos try it themselves and be creative. It’s all about learning, problem solving, trying your best, and thinking outside the box, NOT being perfect. That’s the Ms. Dolinger way!
Project No. 1: PAPER WEAVING
See how to cut the warp on a loom and the weft to weave into it! Fancy words for a fun activity.
PRO TIPS:
- Tell your kiddos to say or sing “over the mountain and under the sea, opposites make a weaving prettyyy”! You’re welcome 😂
- Cut wider strips (warp and weft) for younger kids, and thinner ones as they get older.
Fingers crossed, I’ll post videos of advanced options soon!
Always remember: let your kiddos try it themselves and be creative. It’s all about learning, problem solving, trying your best, and thinking outside the box, NOT being perfect. That’s the Ms. Dolinger way!
