I can't throw out scraps so the annual hosted by is always a welcome nudge to make me make a tiny debt in my scrap pile.

πŸͺ‘

Yesterday I had a little power sewing session, combining string-shaped scraps into these improv blocks. Lot's of prints and bold colors are in here, so I think it qualifies for this week's theme "power clash".

πŸͺ‘

So far there are two large blocks and I'd say I used about 10% of the roughly string-shaped scraps, so a lot to go still...

The quilt top is finished and I could not be happier!

🌸

This project started in 2019 (spring, I think). The nearly complete top traveled to Austin in early 2020 for a quiltcon workshop and then lay dormant for a year until I started making the missing blocks. Unfortunately I ran out of fabric and stopped when the new fabric wasn't a good match in color. When I pulled the project out again this year, this mismatch didn't bother me anymore, so here she finally is β€” complete.

These are the last two rows for my current quilty WIP. It was a pleasure to take out this nearly finished quilt and congratulate my former self for putting it together β€” I'm in love πŸ₯°.

πŸ“

I remember falling out of love with the project when I realized that I had run out of Essex Linen in "Flax", and the new batch looked significantly different. Somehow now that really doesn't bother me anymore. I think it adds to the feel of this being tiles (Swipe for an image that shows the color variation).

There isn't much sewing time this month because I'll be traveling to Switzerland for a conference. Exciting and a little scary (I hate flying even more after the long travel break during this pandemic).

Nearly a year ago, offered his "Ottoman rings" workshop to our guild and last June I finally finished up my Ottoman rings mini in the train to Amsterdam. With everything that was going on in June, I never got around to sharing it here, but finally here we go!

β•

I tried to create the impression of light breaking through trees with color and value placement, so it felt fitting to photograph it in the botanical garden.

The radial quilting lines were inspired by beautiful quilting designs by .

Does anyone from the recognize this charity quilt top? I picked it up over a year ago and finally finished the quilt. I hope my unknown collaborator is happy with the quilting πŸ˜‰

I experimented a bit with free motion quilting designs and some parts are more successful than others, I'd say. The lesson I learned, is that a small scale, figurative free motion quilting design does not work well with busy prints...

Soon this quilt will head over to the DC Diaper Bank, I hope!

Started quilting this quilt! My plan is to use the quilting to reinforce the map aspect of the design, so it'll be hand quilted with a mixture of organic lines, referencing flow and topographic lines, and regular grids.

πŸ—ΊοΈ

I'm discovering ways to make hand quilting work for me. Previously my wrist would hurt after a short time. Improved tools, posture and some key tips from an on-demand lecture by .parkes were very helpful! I still need regular breaks but I don't think I'm actually injuring my hands, arms or shoulders any more and the process is actually enjoyable now!

πŸ—ΊοΈ

Maybe it's a beginner thing, but I can't get the stitching lines the way I want without marking, so I use a hera marker to freehand draw some creases to follow.

This is my finished composition for the ! I'm about to pin baste and can't wait to start hand quilting!

πŸͺ‘

The prompts for the last 4 days were helping with pulling the quilt top design together and adding things that I felt were missing.

πŸͺ‘

For day 27 (add something to the edge), I added two pieces, the brown one to balance the composition and the yellow-pink print at the bottom. The latter reminds me of Trudi, a rescue hummingbird I took care of for some very special time (it's on the back of a quilt I made dedicated to her).

πŸͺ‘

On day 28 (add small details), I appliquΓ©d a bunch of brown cut out printed flowers and leaves, to balance the yo-yos. I also added a little patch of flower dyed orange fabric to commemorate the bright cosmos and coreopsis outside.

πŸͺ‘

Finally, on day 30 (intuitive emboidery) and 31 (quilters choice), I added french knots, some details to the trappunto bits, and finally an improvised embroidery of Trudi, my darling hummingbird.

Day 26: Trappunto! I noticed that I have barely any transparent fabric. This thin grey cotton that was formerly a skirt lining was the best I could find in that regard.

πŸͺ¨

When auditioning the fabric with some thread bits, I was reminded of a stone , so I placed this trappunto shape into my other "hand".

πŸͺ¨

To complete my abstract map, I added a cup for the place I get coffee and a bowl (from blueberry dyed fabric) to the cafeteria spot.

Thank you all for following along with the daily practice challenge I did last month. I still have a couple of posts covering the last steps of piecing. For August, I plan to finish the quilting and have this mini ready for the show "one square mile".

πŸͺΆ

Last month and in the month before, actually, I've completed a number of other projects that I haven't shown yet. I wanted to try getting back to writing about some of thrm a bit more on my dusty blog. We'll see if that will really happen.

For this one (day 23: add the passage of time), I was struggling for a while. Time passing quickly and the feeling of "running out of time" has been a big source of stress for me recently and I wanted to appropriately represent this.

πŸ•›

Representing just this month didn't feel right, because the stress comes from taking a more long term perspective. It is also tightly connected to my professional career.

πŸ•

Then it finally clicked: I decided to represent the 4 years that have passed since my PhD (since I officially got it). In academia this starts a clock: you can only apply for many fellowships and grants for a certain amount of years after your PhD. I'm not going to go into how this tends to punish or at least stress women more than men. In my opinion it's really one of many examples of "well meant but not so great in practice" policies.

πŸ•’

Anyways, these four years are now represented on my quilt as beautiful yellow blobs.

I'm a few days late to posting things here but nearly caught up with the prompts for the .

πŸ“Ώ

For day 20 ("add something that leaves home with you"), I embroidered a necklace I've been wearing a lot lately. I got it on a trip to NY, the last trip before Covid. Because I love the negative shape it makes, I wanted to emphasize it. Because the space is so small, I used reverse appliquΓ©.

πŸ“Ώ

I love touching the necklace, so I put it in my "hand shapes".

πŸ’Š

For day 21 ("add something that is usually just home"), I traced the container that pills come in in the US. I remember seeing them in US TV shows and wondering why I've not seen this in Germany.

πŸ’Š

Since I'm 15 I take one thyroxin pill every day to compensate for hypothyroidism, so I touch this kind of box basically every day. Strange when you think about it. It definitely deserved a spot on my quilt.

πŸ‘“

I love seeing all those familiar objects on the quilt together!
