You might have seen this elk painting in my daughter’s tour of my studio a few weeks back (you can find that in my IG reels… it’ll make you chuckle 🙂). I’ve finally finished it and it’s headed to . “Encounter in the Mist,” 24x18”, oil on linen mounted panel.
Ok guys, in light of my video post from yesterday about AI… here’s a self portrait that I recently finished. I almost scrapped it originally because I was uncertain that this was how I wanted to portray myself. I suppose there is some idealization but I still tried to be faithful to my proportions and anatomy (my daughter saw this and said I looked like a man 😆). We all have insecurities and the AI apps play into those, giving us an idealized and objectified version of ourselves. But in this painting, I was able to choose every step of the way what I wanted it to be about, even if some of those choices made me a little uncomfortable! I titled it, “Anything but Linear.” It’s about the various directions our lives can take us. I've always known I wanted to be an artist, but along the way there have been many other things that made me who I am today. I am a woman. I was (still am, albeit poorly) a classical musician. I am an athlete. A wife. A mom. And I'm an artist who takes delight in capturing the juxtaposition between opposites: angles and curves, feminine and masculine, light and shadow. I’m feeling insecure right now just putting this out there for the internet to pick apart but I’m proud to say it’s my own creation and not something that resulted from a few key words being plugged into an app…
I don’t usually care about trends, but I couldn’t resist this one.

Currently in Cancun. I’m pretty much living in swim suits but haven’t spent much time in the sun (hey, maybe that’s my secret to always looking 14 years old). It’s been great to have unlimited painting time! Thankful for the vacation and for a chance to just play. I like doing self portraits to experiment with light, so this was just a combo of studies using two mirrors and hotel window light/interior lighting. It is always challenging and humbling attempting a self portrait from life! Yikes. 😳😳😳

I was able to spend a bit more time on this aspen painting in the studio and I’m calling it done. Here in Colorado, the fall colors are fading fast as we settle into colder temperatures and occasional snow. But it was truly one of the best fall seasons I’ve ever experienced! My second 3-hr demo from the workshop on painting children hosted by the , 11x14 on by . I was flying on this one! So many topics for discussion too, including how to judge the correct values when painting vibrant reds, how to simplify and edit a complex background, and how to integrate the figure with the landscape. So much fun! This one is sold but I’m hoping to start a larger version in the studio very soon.

My first painting in the Anna Rose Bain Workshop sponsored by The Rochester Art Club and put together by the most organized artist I know, Suzi Zefting Kuhn. Anna's teaching style and approachable attitude created an atmosphere of serious learning with a whole lot of laughter. My favorite personal comment came at the end of a day where I suspected I was going to do something I shouldn't but it was going to be fun and easy. It also did zero for the painting. About half way through my excitement she chirps in, "Don't do it, dooon't do it!" Haha...busted! To me it was hillarious because of course she was right, I kind of knew it but did it anyway. She painted masterfully throught the weekend giving excellent personal instruction to all! You can see her demos on Suzi's fb page. And what I really found to be beneficial in her teaching is that she constantly talked about design and how she places color notes, values, edges, etc, to move the eye around a painting. Take one of her workshops. It is worth whatever the cost!!!
I just finished teaching a workshop at The Rochester Art Club on painting children, and it was a huge success!! As it happens, it was my first workshop in over five years due to Covid, and having a baby… I was so excited to share the things I’ve learned in the past five years and beyond! Thank you to RAC for being such amazing hosts, and thank you to my wonderful students!

Throwback to when I was working on this painting of my kids. I still love how my little boy’s face is obscured by shadow but it’s still undeniably him! I have a workshop coming up at the end of October and it’s all about painting children. So excited to share what I’ve learned in 8 years of painting my own children, as well as over 15 years of doing commissioned portraits. Also, this is my first workshop in over 5 years! Just finished a large-scale studio piece inspired by my recent trip to the with my twin sister . As it happens, she is the model in this new painting, “The Moon and the Muse,” 36x24”, oil on panel. I loved the challenge of making everything in this painting slightly darker than the full moon; it was definitely an exercise in value control! Also, as the paint was drying, I noticed that small gnats kept flying into the painting and getting stuck there. I wonder if maybe they thought the moon and sky were real?? Lol. Who knows. I’m not sure gnats can “think.” Anyways… this painting is available. DM me for inquiries!

Another painting from the ! I wasn’t really sure how this one was going to go. It was cold and cloudy and approaching sunset, but as I painted, there was an opening in the clouds and this gorgeous pink and yellow light came through over the ocean. Most fun I’ve ever had painting a wave (usually I’m just frustrated, lol). This 6x8” is available through my website (update: SOLD).

I have started and abandoned way more self portraits than I’ve actually finished! Here’s one from this summer… it is a full length painting but for a number of different reasons, I may just cut out the head and abandon the rest. Or I'll have to recompose the whole thing. I think my ultimate goal as an artist is to make each painting one where I’m happy with every square inch of it, and not just certain parts! Watch how I crop an oil painting that was previously attached to stretcher bars, and mount it to an ACM panel using a conservation-friendly adhesive. What this video doesn't show is that I weight down my panel even MORE with additional books and even some heavy kettlebells! It turned out great - no air bubbles! I used a pre-sanded ACM panel from @artefexart, and my adhesive was from @rublevcolours @natural.pigments .
