📖 The Witch in the Cell

Synopsis:

Strange things begin to occur when a new patient arrives at an institute for the insane. Set in early 1900's The Witch in the Cell tells the story of Esther a young girl who works at the institute helping her aunt in the kitchen. Little Esther is the sole survivor of a fire and she struggles to adjust to her tragic new life. Little does she realize the answer will come from a mysterious isolated new patient. Meanwhile the other patients are concerned about missing residents about which the staff seem to be curiously unconcerned. Young Esther must overcome her fears to save her aunt and friends from the ominous problems plaguing the residents at the institution.

🎭 Auditions: September 8 & 9, 2026 (to be announced)

🎭 Performance Dates: 3rd Week of October 2026 at the The Goddard Center.

Cast of Characters

Esther: 9 years old, niece of Minnie, any race but preferably African American

Minnie: 30 years old, aunt of Esther, any race but preferably African American, is the
cook for the institution

Tess: 12 years old, daughter of Minnie, any race but preferably African American

Ruth: 40 years old, any race but preferably African American, in charge of the cell
block of the institution

Dr Mitchell: 60-70 years old, white male, runs the institution

Dr Ryan: 50-60 years old, white male, member of the Board of Regents for the institution

Nurse Isabelle: 40-50 years old, white female, head nurse of the institution

Dr. Emil: 20-25 years old, fresh out of medical school, works for the institution

Orderly Drake: 20-25 years old, big, and hulky, works for the institution.

Orderly Chance: 20’s-30’s years old, works for the institution.

Regina: 20’s-30’s any race, patient of the institution.

Anna: 20’s-30’s any race, preferably Native American, patient of the institution.

Lil: Late teens, early 20’s any race, patient of the institution.

The Witch: Any age, any race, patient of the institution.

A mental institution somewhere in the Plains States

Last night, Spotlight Playhouse proudly supported Sara's Project, a key community organization, at their annual fundraising event. We're grateful to all who've supported us in our first year. We're delighted to support the community that has supported us. The strength of a community theatre is rooted in its community. We wanted to share with all of you our deepest appreciation for an incredible first year!
Including in our contribution was a pair of orchestra premium tickets to Wicked in Dallas including a VIP parking pass, a Glinda and and Elphaba swag bag filled with everything a good witch and a bad witch might need for a trip to the Emerald City! Congratulations Sara’s Project on a fantastic event!

We have an exciting announcement! Actually, in true dramatic form, we have several! Today we will be sharing the official board of directors of Spotlight Playhouse Theatre, Inc.! When we decided to take this concept to the next level, we knew we had to assemble the very best. We did just that! Over the next several days we will be posting bios of each board member so that you can get to know these incredibly talented individuals. We will also be announcing a couple of shows that we will be doing that we think you will be incredibly pleased with. So many cool things are happening in our theater community and we are excited to have the opportunity to help grow the arts in Southern Oklahoma!
