The local Ikenobo chapter was hard at work yesterday, learning and creating Chabana arrangements… a deceptively simple arrangement that has far less rules than most styles, but with some specific strict guidelines— the flowers can’t have a smell or be too garish, you can use 2-5 pieces, leaves can’t touch the rim, but stems can. All to help enhance the harmony of the chanoyu (tea ceremony).
We finished the afternoon session with freestyle arrangements!

Yesterday we were honored host local kintusgi practitioner for a workshop on the ancient art of gold stitching — repairing broken ceramics with urushi lacquer and finishing with gold powder. This practice is thought to have originated with Sh**un Yoshimasa, considered one of the key factors in many of the elements of Japanese culture we know today. Please visit Mr. Singer’s IG and website for more information!

Yesterday the local Ikenobo group practiced the classical Aspidistra arrangement. This included a precise order placement with regards to the angle of the sun, the “side” of the leaves (they are asymmetrical) and of course the height and distance between leaves. We also practiced a nisshiuke arrangement, with less (but as strict) rules. A fascinating day!
