Our Back Story

"You are familiar with nightmares, I am sure. Which makes this quite important.” The venom had fled his voice, leaving only a trace of insincerity and an insistent enthusiasm.Electric lights buzzed and hummed around white and red paint, bold words bellowed their truth. All were welcome, the bold words proclaimed. Come one, come all, hurry, hurry. A great beast in the nothingness waited to pounce. The carnival opened its jaws. “What sort of nightmare would you like to be?”

I got to interview the very smart, talented and beautiful Rachel Madsen. Listen here as she talks about her road to get to where she is now along with her project Cornelius Cobbs Carnival of Dreams

I'm from podcast

Ep232.1 The Madsen Files This week had the opportunity to interview and chat with the lovely and talented Rachel Madsen as we deep dive into her craft of tailoring, the ins and outs of the industry, a few of her prior jobs that led her to her side/passion project Cornelius Cobbs Carnival of Dreams. Please find her and follow her on FB: Madsen Creations by Rachel Madsen along with Cornelius Cobbs Carnival of Dreams IG:
Another pile of pearly off-whites this morning. They were meticulously laid in the spaces between the spread fingers of my left hand. At first glance it appeared that my wrist ended in a rising sun of gaping mouths. They grinned wickedly. Four sharp angles of unfamiliar teeth opening for the first time. I admit that my imagination may have been playing a funny trick on me, I was tired, but I swear I could hear them. They were crying. Starving, yes, I could feel their pain moving through the veins of my hand; a creeping, deeply carnal ache. Begging sweetly for… something. I don’t know. I don’t know what you feed a hand that suddenly decides to be hungry.

Luckily, both the moment and the question passed without answer and my hand forgot its appetite. It was just a hand again. Hands are only hands. Teeth are only teeth. Even the ones that show up suddenly while you’re sleeping and feel like they may still have a lullaby between them.

Is this going to be a regular occurrence from now on? To be honest with you, I’m not sure how to feel about that. I’ve never had too many teeth before. Then again, I’ve never had too few. I suppose I’m just entirely unaware of the social standard here. Most of them are human, from what I can tell. I’m not an expert in the matter. Certainly there are a few incisors here that, if human, seem like they would be uncomfortable. What with the low hum they emit, or the way that (on closer inspection) tiny mandible blades of bone along the edges seem to be gasping for air. Or something.

I pulled my hand from the arrangement slowly. I don’t know why I took so much care not to let the flesh of my hand actually touch the pieces of bone, but I’m glad that I was careful. Even if I’m not sure why. I feel like, maybe, it’s better some things are left unlearned. That doesn’t mean I didn’t check beneath my pillow for a note, hoping for some kind of explanation. No luck. I guess whoever, or whatever, is leaving me these little gifts isn’t too big on communication. Or maybe they’re a bit angry over my ripping up the previous note they left.

I went to take out the trash late last night, and I did notice that the scraps of parchment had vanished from the top of the bin where I had scattered them. In their place were shreds of skin and an unrecognizable fur that lay in sticky clumps. So maybe immediately tearing apart a note just because it blinks at you is a bit of a rash decision. That might be my bad. I’m not used to letters just… looking at me. Then again, I’m not used to mysterious teeth appearing in intricate designs overnight, either. So perhaps I should keep an open mind.

It’s been a great day, otherwise! I’ve been in a pretty good mood, all things considered, and I guess it shows. Been getting a lot of compliments on my smile today, which is always nice. My bed is getting a little crowded. The pile from yesterday’s morning and now this new collection are taking up more space than you’d imagine teeth would. For now, though, I can tell they’d rather stay right where they are. Who am I to argue?

Anyway. More tomorrow, I think. I’m not sure why I feel a need to share all of this with you. It didn’t occur to me until just now, but I think… well, I think they like it. I don’t know if I can feel that they’re happy when I write to you or if I’m just happy for them. A question for the philosophers, I guess.

Until then, my friends!
-David
It has been a strange morning, my friends. I woke in a cold sweat with my hands beneath my pillow, knuckles white, fingers clawed around a piece of parchment that tanned at the edges as though the paper was slowly aging into embers. This confused me. I hadn't lost any teeth recently nor placed them beneath my resting head, the commonly accepted dream exchange, so a mysterious parchment made less than the usual sense. Adding to the confusion was the small pile of molars, bicuspids and canines that greeted my eyes when I lifted my pillow to examine the situation further. Curious. The largest of these gifts spanned my palm, a scythe-like canine, and hummed gently against my skin as though sensing the sweet blood beneath it.

I've checked my own mouth and can confirm: none of these teeth are mine. Or all of them are. If any of you find it especially difficult to chew today, please let me know. Wealth should be shared among friendly faces.

The parchment, unrolled and smoothed against a door frame, revealed itself to be a note. It was boldly scratched in red ink. The aged fibers smelled faintly of dirt and gunpowder. I will share with you its contents as I remember them, but... well, it is strange. As I recall the note, I can see the letters moving in my memory. I do not remember them moving, but here they are. Doing just that. As I try to pin them down for recollection, they become beetles and vanish.

The note read as follows:

"My dear carnies, curs, and cretins,

Do you wonder why you dream? Do you name your nightmares? Where they come from, who they are, how they find you; do you lay awake with these silly questions rattling around the empty space between your ears? You could ask them yourself, if you wanted. Any of you could have asked, if any of you stopped being afraid of knowing.

It is time, I think, to stop being afraid and become a thing to fear. Questions to which you are the answer hold no terror. The Carnival approaches. You remember what to ask.

What sort of nightmare would you be?"

There was more, my friends, but I'm afraid that it was after reading the last sentence I suddenly realized I was being watched. Specifically, I caught the spaces between each 'o' of the note... well, blinking. So many eyes. So many 'I's. One of them was startled and I had torn the note into a hundred whispering shreds before I knew which 'I' I was.

So that was a strange morning. Anyway, just wanted to share a funny story with you all. Hope you have a good one!
