🎬 Memories of Disney-MGM Studios

Debra Ballard sent us these throwback photos from a visit to Disney-MGM Studios in the mid-2000s, and they are such a great snapshot of the park before it became Disney’s Hollywood Studios. ❤️

The Great Movie Ride was still welcoming guests into the movies, the Sorcerer’s Hat towered over Hollywood Boulevard, and the park was filled with those details that made Disney-MGM Studios feel so different from the park we know today. 🎥✨

There’s even a look at a promotion for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which was released in December 2005. 🎬

Disney-MGM Studios remained the park’s name until January 7, 2008, when it officially became Disney’s Hollywood Studios. 🎬

🐭 97 years ago today, Mickey’s Follies was released!

This was the 10th Mickey Mouse short, and it introduced a song that would become a pretty big part of Mickey’s early history: “Minnie’s Yoo-Hoo.” 🎶

Mickey performs the song during a barnyard variety show featuring dancing ducks and an opera-singing Patricia Pig. 🐷🎤

Written by Walt Disney and Carl Stalling, “Minnie’s Yoo-Hoo” was published as sheet music in 1930, becoming the first Disney song to be released as sheet music. It also became the theme song for the original Mickey Mouse Clubs held in theaters. ❤️

30 years ago today, The Jamie Foxx Show premiered on The WB! 🎬

Starring Jamie Foxx as Jamie King, the sitcom followed an aspiring actor from Texas who moves to Los Angeles and works at his family’s hotel, the King’s Tower, while pursuing his dreams of making it in show business. The series ran for five seasons and 100 episodes, ending in 2001.

The cast also included Garrett Morris as Jamie’s Uncle Junior. Morris was an original cast member of Saturday Night Live when SNL debuted in 1975.

And speaking of dreams in show business… 🎹✨

Years later, Jamie Foxx would become part of the Disney and Pixar family, providing the voice of Joe Gardner, a middle-school band teacher with a passion for jazz, in Soul. The film debuted on Disney+ in 2020.

🎂 Happy Birthday, Jack Black! 🥳

August 28, 1969: Jack Black was born on this date in Santa Monica, California. He turns 57 today! 🎉

From School of Rock and High Fidelity to Kung Fu Panda and A Minecraft Movie, Black has built a career around some unforgettable characters.

He even stepped into the Star Wars universe as Captain Bombardier in The Mandalorian. ⭐

And speaking of memorable roles, back in the early 2000s, Jack Black was offered the part of Syndrome in Pixar’s The Incredibles, but turned it down. Jason Lee ultimately voiced the villain.

Now, The Incredibles is one of Jack Black’s favorite movies of all time, and he has said he really regrets turning down the role. 😳

🌊 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Exhibit closes at Disneyland

60 years ago today, Disneyland’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Exhibit closed in Tomorrowland after more than 11 years.

The walk-through attraction featured original sets and props from Disney’s 1954 film, including portions of Captain Nemo’s Nautilus. What began as a temporary way to fill out Tomorrowland became a surprisingly popular attraction and remained at Disneyland from 1955 until 1966.

🎹 The organ from Captain Nemo’s Nautilus later found a new home in the Haunted Mansion ballroom, where it can still be seen today. 👻 A little piece of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea still lives on in the Haunted Mansion! 🙌😃

Peter Cullen, the legendary voice actor best known as the voice of Optimus Prime in Transformers, has died at 85.

Born July 28, 1941, Cullen became one of the most recognizable voices of a generation. But for Disney fans, he was also the beloved voice of Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh, as well as Monterey Jack in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers and Captain Nathaniel Flint in Treasure Planet.

Cullen's incredible range went far beyond animation. In the 1987 film Predator, he provided the Predator's distinctive vocalizations.

For many of us, his voice was simply part of growing up. Whether you knew him as Optimus Prime, Eeyore, or one of the many other characters he brought to life, Peter Cullen gave these characters voices that are impossible to forget.

REMEMBERING PAUL REUBENS 🎈

August 27, 1952 — Paul Reubens was born on this date in Peekskill, New York.

For an entire generation, he was Pee-wee Herman. From Pee-wee’s Big Adventure to Pee-wee’s Playhouse, Reubens created one of the most unforgettable characters in television and movies.

But his career went far beyond Pee-wee.

For Disney fans, one of his most nostalgic roles came in the beloved 1986 movie Flight of the Navigator. Reubens provided the voice of MAX, the wisecracking computer aboard the futuristic spacecraft. 🚀

His distinctive voice could also be heard at Disney Parks as Captain Rex (RX-24), the trainee pilot in the original Star Tours. Years later, Rex returned as DJ R-3X at Oga’s Cantina in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

He also voiced Lock in The Nightmare Before Christmas. 🎃

And there’s another great piece of nostalgia behind this photo. In 1987, Pee-wee Herman appeared on the premiere episode of Dolly Parton’s ABC variety show Dolly. Dolly visited the Playhouse, and the two performed “Hey, Good Lookin’” together. 🎶

Paul Reubens passed away in 2023 at the age of 70, but the characters and memories he gave us continue to live on. ❤️

On August 27, 1992, Martin premiered on FOX! 🎬

Starring Martin Lawrence as Martin Payne, the sitcom ran for five seasons and became a huge part of ‘90s television nostalgia. And of course, Martin didn’t just play Martin… he also gave us characters like Sheneneh, Jerome and Mama Payne! 😂

Over the years, several members of the cast would go on to have Disney connections.

Martin Lawrence later starred in Disney’s College Road Trip, Tisha Campbell-Martin appeared in Disney Channel’s Lemonade Mouth, Tichina Arnold guest-starred on Disney XD’s Pair of Kings, and Tracy Morgan, who played Hustle Man on Martin from 1994 to 1996, voiced Blaster in Disney’s G-Force! 🐭

ON THIS DAY: August 27, 1964 ☂️

62 years ago today, Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins had its spectacular world premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

Starring Julie Andrews as the practically perfect nanny and Dick Van D**e as Bert, the film had been years in the making. Andrews was making her feature-film debut, and the result would become one of Walt Disney’s most beloved films.

The lavish premiere took seven months to plan and was Walt Disney’s first major Hollywood premiere since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The evening also served as a benefit for the California Institute of the Arts, or CalArts.

When the movie ended, the audience gave it a five-minute standing ovation.

Mary Poppins went on to receive 13 Academy Award nominations and win five, including Best Actress for Julie Andrews and Best Original Song for “Chim Chim Cher-ee.” 🏆
