ODE TO LANIER GRAHAM
48” × 48”
Acrylic and Mixed Media on Canvas

Some paintings carry more than color. They carry gratitude.

This piece is titled Ode to Lanier Graham, in honor of my friend and collaborator, Lanier Graham, former curator of the New York Museum of Modern Art, internationally respected art historian, and co-author with me of the book The Color of Light.

Lanier had a remarkable way of hearing paintings before he ever described them. He called many of my abstract works “Color Songs,” believing that color could communicate with the same emotional depth as music. That idea has stayed with me ever since.

This painting continues that conversation.

Beneath its quiet surface are layers of history, memory, hidden marks, and decisions made over decades of painting. It isn’t meant to reveal itself all at once. Like music, it asks the viewer to spend time with it.

Every collector brings a different interpretation, and that’s exactly where the work begins to live.

There is a quiet patience in the way light finds its place.
This piece is about the contrast of heavy, grounded textures and the sudden, striking moments of brightness that break through. Built up with layers of mixed media, it’s a physical exploration of finding light in the heavy spaces.
At \bm{48" x 60"}, this is a statement piece designed to bring depth, texture, and a luminous energy to a room.

Yesterday’s practice became today’s piece. I wasn’t chasing perfection. I was chasing atmosphere.

This original pencil study explores light, architecture, and depth through loose, expressive mark making. Sometimes the energy of a sketch says more than a polished work ever could.

Created inSouthern California, this original drawing is now available through my website.
