Seagulls somehow manage to be any and everywhere. From local marinas to the Salish sea coast, from Lake Michigan to Norway, their screaming can be heard everywhere. We canโ€™t escape them. Watch your ice creams ๐Ÿฆ

I have almost no pictures of seagulls, so enjoy some other miscellaneous sea birds.

Seashells and Beach Finds

I love the beach. Every tide pool and beach showcases different shells, anemones, crabs, jellyfish, chitons, plant life, and critters. It is awe inspiring to peer into their little world. Scavenging on the beach lets me inner child rejoice.

In another life I would have loved to be a marine biologist honestly. Alas, stuck as a midwife now.

Sardines - Sardinha em azeite

I am frequently inspired by nature, the patterns and beauty that come from the ecosystems around me. But once in a while others become my muse. Travel is my second love. I have always enjoyed stepping out and seeing more of the world, tasting the cuisine, learning about the people, and wandering through towns and cities. Being somewhere else feels like home.

This piece is inspired by my trip to Portugal with a childhood friend. Porto is still one of my favorite places in the world. Not only are sardines prevalent in Portugal, but there are entire dedicated stores dedicated to selling canned sardines (to tourists). The ones in the grocery stores are just as good. But the sheer scale is staggering. Enjoy some other fun street art, pieces from the Museu Nacional do Azulejo, and our time in Sintra.

This next piece is the cowfish, and is also my business logo.

Thereโ€™s not a huge sentimental story about the reasoning behind why I decided to call myself Cowfish Linocuts. Maybe because heโ€™s weird, cute, and unserious all at the same time. I wanted a logo that could embody creativity, art, and weirdness. If you know me in real life, you know that Iโ€™m not an artist by trade, my employment is in medicine, as a certified nurse midwife finishing up my DNP and as a nurse on a busy med surg unit. Despite this, I have always dreamed to make art more than a hobby because art has always been my happy place. I was drawn to linocutting for the simplicity of the black and white reliefs, the satisfaction from carving the little rubber shreds, and rolling the ink onto each piece.

Although I just started linocutting a few months ago, I have taken years of art classes (think soft pastels, oil painting camp, color pencils). Those many classes allowed me to explore so many media and built my basis of sketch and art form. I have always had a penchant for small and immense detail, so I actually thought that I would be a dentist or a surgeon, clearly the fine motor dexterity was meant for something else. Now I find inspiration everywhere, mostly in the fantastical nature here in the Pacific Northwest, but also in many other ecosystems. All these things are part of the story that lead me to linocutting. So glad to have you on my journey. Stay tuned for some fun new items, including fish bookmarks and other fun designs like orcas and shore crabs.

Welcome to the magical world of mushrooms!๐Ÿ„ There are an estimated 6 MILLION species of fungi in the world. This is my first ensemble linocut piece, definitely a learning process but so fun.

Photo credits to Kelvin Baker for capturing the fungi so beautifully. These were taken in a variety of locations, Baker Lake, Porpoise Point, Anderson and Watson Lake, Deception Pass, and so much more.

Also sorry, not all future posts will have amazing pictures to accompany them. This one is an exception though.

Frog or toad? ๐Ÿธ ๐Ÿธ not many froggy friends near us but these next two pictures are too funny.

This is back in Michigan...
1. This enormous one looks like Hypno-toad
2. Had to rescue this fellow from being squashed by Jimbo

A demure banana slug

Moist, unbothered, making the 10,000 mile journey to nowhere. Peep their beautiful patterns, just like an overripe banana ๐ŸŒ

A snail on the move ๐ŸŒ

This linocut is inspired by the many multitudes of snails we find on rainy walks. Always hustling, always going somewhere.
