A room full of people who love to sing.

Some have sung their whole lives.
Some are returning after years away.
Some read music with ease.
Others are brushing up on skills they haven’t used in a while.

Together, we laugh.
We learn.
We challenge one another.
And every week, we leave a little better than when we arrived.

That’s what community choir is all about.

We’ve heard those four words a lot this year.

“I used to sing in high school.”

“I used to sing in college.”

“I used to sing in church.”

Somewhere along the way, life gets busy, and music quietly gets pushed aside.

The Runestone Chorus exists because we believe it doesn’t have to stay that way.

Whether you’ve sung for decades or it’s been years since your last rehearsal, there’s still a place for your voice.

Our collaborative pianist, Rebecca, has been accompanying choirs since she was in 7th grade, when she played for her junior high choir’s performance of Candle on the Water and a Walt Disney medley.

So what made her say yes to the Runestone Chorus?

“The people and the environment. I wanted to be surrounded by positive people who enjoy music and have a shared vision.”

One thing that’s surprised her most has been the choir’s impact beyond rehearsals and concerts through community performances and events.

Rebecca says it best:

“Music has the power to change you. If it changes you, it changes the world around you.”

And her encouragement to anyone considering joining?

“You have a voice. If you enjoy singing, come, share, and let the music do the rest.” ❀

If you’ve never been part of a community choir, you might imagine rehearsals are intense and serious all the time.

The truth?

Some weeks we nail a difficult passage.

Some weeks we laugh because we definitely didn’t.

We learn.
We encourage one another.
We celebrate the little victories.
And every Tuesday, we leave a little better than when we arrived.

That’s the beauty of community music.

It’s not about being perfect.
It’s about making music together.

đŸŽ¶ Why Justin keeps coming back


Justin has been part of Alexandria’s community choir for several years, but when he learned the Runestone Chorus would become a full-season choir, he was excited to be part of it.

“It is a full-season choir now as opposed to just one concert per year.”

For Justin, it’s about more than preparing for a single performance. It’s about continuing to grow as a singer, making great music, and building something that will have a lasting impact on our community.

“I’m amazed by the talent and need for a choir like this in Alexandria!”

His advice?

“If you’ve sung in choir before, come try it for a few weeks.”

đŸŽ¶ A little reflection from the director


Truthfully, the Runestone Chorus wasn’t something I was looking for.

The opportunity showed up unexpectedly, and I simply said:
“Yeah
 let’s try this.”

I don’t think any of us fully knew what it would become.

What started as an idea and an informational meeting quickly became a room full of people showing up every Tuesday night to make music together—and then, a real community.

One thing I’ve realized is that a lot of adults quietly stop making music, even though they still love it. Often because life simply leaves fewer spaces for it.

That’s why spaces like this matter.

And honestly?
I think we’re only scratching the surface of what this choir can become.

One thing we discovered during the first season of the Runestone Chorus:

A lot of people love to sing
 but assume they’re “not good enough” to join a choir.

The truth?

Community choir isn’t about perfection.
It’s about:
đŸŽ” making music together
đŸŽ” growing together
đŸŽ” laughing through rehearsals
đŸŽ” and being part of something meaningful

Some of our singers hadn’t sung in a choir for years before joining.

Now, in the “off season”, Tuesday nights don’t feel quite the same without it ❀

If singing has been sitting quietly in the back of your heart for awhile
 maybe this is your sign to give it another try.

Why did Dan join the Runestone Chorus?

“A chance to sing harmony in a group.”

What keeps him coming back?

“Enjoyable yet challenging.”

One thing that surprised him most?
“I knew or had connections with more people than I thought.”

And for anyone nervous about joining a choir?

“Just do it. Life is short.”

đŸŽ¶ One unexpected part of starting the Runestone Chorus?

Realizing how many connections already existed in the room.

Friends reconnecting.
Former classmates singing together again.
People discovering mutual friends they didn’t even know they had.

Turns out community choir makes the world feel a little smaller—in the best way ❀
