The Gilpin House was built in 1798 and was the home of George Gilpin. Mr. Gilpin was a land surveyor; Served in the army with General Washington; was an honorary pallbearer in Washington's funeral; had a cousin named Martha Custis who he introduced to Washington and she became Martha Washington. The place is what was called a 'Merchants Home'. That's where the merchant lived upstairs and had his storefront on the street level. Originally Gilpin had a general merchandise store on the street level.
Today the street level tenant is The Principle Gallery and I live upstairs. There is a cobblestone alley out back and the stones came across from England as ballast on trading ships in the 1700's.
