What does 'Catholic' mean? It means universal. What is so universal about us? There are about a dozen different Rites that are all in communion with each other. Basically, they are different cultures with different ways to celebrate the mass all coming together as one Universal church. Which rites do you know of?

Did you know I met a cardinal once? In July of 2014, I had the pleasure of meeting Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria! This was in Roswell, NM. He was cool to talk to for the short amount of time I did. He was considered Papili (possibility of becoming Pope) in the 2005 Conclave that elected Jozef Ratzinger who would become Benedict XVI. I hope I get to meet more cardinals in the future.

So we know I am a character actor for Renaissance Festivals. I play a bishop. Just like last week, I ran into real clergy but this time intentionally. This is the Archbishop of Santa Fe, His Excellency, John Wester. I love doing stuff that inspires my characters.

The 6 Main Liturgical Families (Rites) of the Catholic Church ⛪

The Catholic Church is not limited to the Roman Rite alone.
She is a communion of Churches united in the same faith, sacraments, and communion with the Pope, while preserving different liturgical traditions.

Here are the 6 major liturgical families:

1. Latin (Roman) Rite
The largest rite of the Catholic Church, including the Roman Rite and variations like the Ambrosian, Mozarabic, and Anglican Ordinariate traditions.

2. Byzantine Rite
Used by many Eastern Catholic Churches such as the Ukrainian Greek Catholic, Melkite, and Ruthenian Churches.

3. Alexandrian Rite
Used by the Coptic Catholic, Ethiopian Catholic, and Eritrean Catholic Churches.

4. West Syrian (Antiochene) Rite
Used by the Maronite, Syriac Catholic, and Syro-Malankara Churches.

5. East Syrian (Chaldean) Rite
Used by the Chaldean Catholic and Syro-Malabar Churches.

6. Armenian Rite
Used by the Armenian Catholic Church.

Different rites.
Different liturgies and traditions.

Playing a character like I do, I tend to want to educate on different parts of my character's lives and inspirations. Here is another one, The Cathedra. What is a Cathedra. A Cathedra is the seat or chair in which a Bishop presides. It is the seat of office or throne of the Diocese. Every Cathedra is housed in a Cathedral, hence the name. Every bishop who reigns over a diocese has one and only they may sit on it. This picture shows the Cathedra in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe, NM. Current bishop is His Excellency, John Wester, Archbishop of Santa Fe.

It's humbling when you meet the real thing in terms of characters. For Renaissance Festival people, you don't get it as much. This past weekend, I happened to run into an actual Franciscan priest, Father Luke. Here is me, as my Franciscan Bishop character with a real priest. Perhaps one day, he'll wear a real zucchetto.
