New Mexico Documentary Incubator Grant NMDIG is New Mexico's newest grant opportunity for emerging documentary filmmakers

We're excited to share this sneak peek of NMDIG 2026 grant recipient RJ Torres speaking about his project that will take a deep dive into the story of the 1980 Santa Fe prison riot which was the most gruesome prison riot in American history. RJ will tell the story from the unique vantage of exclusive interviews with author Roger Morris who wrote 'The Devil's Butcher Shop', the book that took the definitive look at this dark chapter in NM history.

NMDIG is pleased to introduced 2026 recipient and New Mexico filmmaker Makayla Yazzie. Makayla is an award-winning student filmmaker and multimedia artist currently enrolled at San Juan College with hands-on experience producing, directing, and editing documentary projects. Their work focuses on culturally-driven storytelling, community engagement, and empowering underrepresented voices through visual media.

Makayla's project entitled "Between Home and College: Navajo Student Stories / Shígan dóó college" uses a multimedia apporach to explore the challenges, cultural connections, and personal experiences unique to Navajo college students. We can't wait to see the final outcome!

We're pleased to share 2026 NMDIG recipient Leandra Romero in convo about her documentary project "The Weight of Water". The project follows a former Navy SEAL turned journalist who documents the fight for survival in his own community on the Navajo Nation. It is a multifacited look at the complexities of a figure confronting both systemic neglect and personal tragedy as he reclaims service on his own terms.

With a background in broadcast journalism, Leandra brings editorial and journalistic skills to her work as a documentary filmmaker. Please follow Leandra to learn more about her incredible work as a creative and filmmaker!

We're excited to present 2026 NMDIG grant recipient kelechi agwuncha in conversation about their project called "breath to breath". kelechi is an Igbo-American multimedia artist who reanimates archival material, documentary, and video art by using percussive force as connective tissue. As a former athlete, their work also explores athletic gestures and spatiality as a rehearsal of play.

NMDIG is proud to support kelechi's experimental documentary project that follows Phoenix Savage, a 62 year old black, q***r yogi that uses yoga modalities to extend healing to numerous incarcerated women here in New Mexico.

We're pleased to share Joanna Keane Lopez in conversation about her film "A Raven Croaked like a Witch from a Dead Pine". The project looks at the ways that ranching life, adobe building traditions, and vernacular storytelling persist within the militarized landscape of southern New Mexico’s White Sands Missile Range.

Joanna has been filming extensivley in southern NM collaborating with family and community members who make up this vital community in that part of the state. Please follow Joanna to learn more about her craft and creative journey as an artist & filmmaker.

If you've been working on an application, or have been on the fence, now is the time to get it in before the deadline! The application window will close sharply at 11:59pm on Friday 2/27/26, so there's still time!
