Chicharra Poetry Slam Festival The Chicharra Poetry Slam Festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico is currently the second largest poetry slam event in the nation.

The Chicharra Poetry Slam Festival is a four-day event which takes place in Albuquerque, NM in March. During the festival individual and team poets gather for Slam Poetry bouts, workshops, Open Mics, Specialty Slam Events (Nerd Slam/ Haiku Death Match), a book market, and a final stage to choose the Individual and Team Champion of the festival.

🍎Spoken Word (a.k.a. Performance Poetry): The big u

mbrella. Any poetry written to be spoken aloud. It might pull from theater, comedy, music, storytelling—you name it.

🍊Slam Poetry: A close cousin, but not identical. Slam poetry is spoken word performed within the structure of a poetry slam—a competitive, rules-based event.

Hey, friends!

We know it’s been a little quiet over here lately, but we promise that doesn’t mean things have been quiet behind the scenes.

We’ve been steadily working on Chicharra 2027—preparing for our first organizing committee meeting, reaching out to new venues, exploring ways to make the festival more accessible and convenient for everyone traveling to Albuquerque, and thinking about how we can continue growing Chicharra into something even bigger and better.

We’re not quite ready to share everything yet, but we’re hoping to have new information, new partnerships, and maybe even a few exciting changes to announce soon.

Thanks for sticking with us while we build. The cicadas are still making noise.
