Hieronymus

Hieronymus Hieronymus is a collection of curiosities inspired by Renaissance artist Hieronymus Bosch. Hieronymus was established as an online gallery in 2014 to showcase the collection of the Richard and Alita Rogers Family Foundation.
(2)

The name and aesthetic were inspired by the Renaissance artist Hieronymus Bosch, whose stirring paintings depict fantastical scenes that instill both delight and terror. Like Bosch's paintings, the collection, encompassing ceramics, paintings, prints, sculpture, and other curiosities, traverses the grotesque and picturesque, the sacred and profane. It is built around an appreciation for experimentation; sensuous, biomorphic forms; refined, carefully wrought materials; a sense of humor and whimsy. While the collection spans both time and geography, contemporary ceramics and twentieth-century design are among its strengths.

Sometimes I really don't get to spend time with an object until its time to ship it to its new owner. Such as the case with two Tuareg (Mali) metal alloy spoons. These spoons along with other African-origin spoons have spent most of their time in storage. To me, it's rewarding to deaccession objects whose time with the collection have been as such. The video shows one of the spoons with its traditional carved handle and beautiful etchings.

Clayton Bailey, who recently passed away, began making the "Burping Bowls", in 1968. The bowls are kinetic, hydro-pneumatic objects with each containing a submerged ceramic creature, often with bulging bloodshot eyes and snaggly teeth.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
On June 12th we joined Garth Johnson along with Clayton Bailey's family members and Bailey art experts for a video conversation to show pieces from our collection like the one featured here and to discuss the quirky genius of the artist. The Ceramic Object Study Session is viewable at https://youtu.be/6IEGUjmKM7Q.⁣

Paul Stankard's glass paperweights emphasize detail giving an illusionist feel to each blossom, leaf, and even his “root people” that to Stankard represent the earth spirit. "I want to give the glass organic credibility. I use detail to emphasize the delicate," Stankard said. "I want people to go beyond the wizardry of whether it is real or glass. It is about respect for living things."⁣⁣⁣

⁣⁣⁣
Misty Gamble's "Sunday" installation features 49 pairs of ceramic panties. The colors of dusty purples and pinks emit gentle femininity. In contrast, the undies' glitzy crotches adorn the fun parts with glitter, rhinestones, and shimmer. Each pair seems frozen in a recognizable ripple of a delicate undergarment splayed and flattened on the floor.⁣⁣⁣

Have a sexy Valentine's Day but remember...no means hell no.⁣

Sèvres-style Bisque with two figures, France, 19th century, the man leaning in to try to kiss a woman who is rejecting him. Probably modeled after Bachelier's depiction of characters in La Fee Urgelee, a comic opera first performed at the Court of Fontainebleau in 1765.⁣

Once upon a time, there was this priest wildly in love with a woman who died. In his despair, he procured a “vessel of death” for summoning her spirit, and loved her one more time.⁣

Manchaypuitu (male) and Isichapuitu (female). The “vessels of death” were basically human-like vessels and were known to be powerful tools for bringing the spirits from the past. ⁣

Ericailcane is an Italian artist who expresses himself through drawing, illustration, video, installation, graffiti, and street art. Inspired by Victorian children’s illustrations, he creates a repertoire of strange animals, zoomorphic beings, and characters out of fables that emulate human behavior. Often macabre, his work falls somewhere between a nightmare and a dream as social or ecological criticism.⁣⁣⁣

MONOMOKA is a design duo of twin sisters, Monika and Kasia Gwiazdowska. The two were born in the 1970’s in Wroclaw, Poland. As teenagers, they became fascinated with traditional techniques of the manual artisan and learned to hand sew, crotchet, and knit. Working the most basic tools and materials, namely a crochet hook and yarn, they are able to create stunning sculptural forms made of countless crocheted stitches.⁣

View these two Jason Briggs' pieces and more art from our collection before the "Stranger Beings" exhibition closes this Friday! Emily Davis Gallery has extended its viewing hours till 8 PM tonight.

Jason Briggs is one of the #StrangerBeings Hieronymus artists. Two days remaining to view his piece.

Briggs’ ceramics are formulated to appeal to our senses of attraction and revulsion. The biomorphic forms accessing subconscious recesses to discuss notions of sexuality, curiosity, and psychology. Briggs often incorporates real hair or nail polish to heighten the sense of realism, which perversely serves to make the works more intense and grotesque.

Briggs earned his BFA in Ceramics from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and his MFA in Ceramics from University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His work has been exhibited at Akron Art Museum, The Clay Studio, Mütter Museum of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and Seattle Design Center. He currently teaches ceramics at Belmont University.

Stranger Beings is open through November 22. Don’t miss it!

Who is she?⁣

Géza Szöllősi stretches the bounds of taxidermy through his series "My Pets." Created through taxidermy, "Hungarian Panda 2" perverts the origins of the technique to create a mutation of the animal's original form. The hide of the animal head is inflated and stretched into a near-perfect spherical shape as an absurd, unsettling proxy — retaining the recognizable features of the cow while rejecting any natural form.⁣

Congratulations to The Toledo Museum of Art for their recent installation of Katsuyo Aoki's "Trolldom Teku Maku Mayo Kon". To celebrate, we’re posting a piece from our collection. Swipe to see “Predictive Dream ###II".⁣

Katsuyo Aoki is best known for her ceramic sculptures that apply delicate, swirling forms to dark subject matter. She has dedicated an entire series of intricately formed and complex ceramic skull objects. As the artist states, “skulls express the sacred and vulgar atmosphere of the present age.”⁣

Stranger Beings is closing in two weeks! Make sure to visit Emily Davis Gallery before the exhibition ends.

This week’s #StrangerBeings Hieronymus artist feature: Sean Henry

Henry’s sculptures are influenced by a fusion involving the Italian Renaissance, the Funk Art movement in the US, and artists Robert Arneson and Jack Earl. These sculptures feature the contradictions and ambiguities of the average person, modeled from specific individuals. In the creation, they lose their specific identity and represent a more generalized individual. This leaves the viewer to write their own narrative. Clothing often plays a subtle part in Henry’s figures and alludes to a particular identity.

Henry graduated with a BA in Ceramic Sculpture from Bristol School of Art, Queens Road He is represented by Osborne Samuel Gallery. His work can be found in the National Portrait Gallery collection. He has been exhibited at Galleri Andersson/Sandström and Forum Gallery. Henry is married with three children; and lives and works near Winchester, Hampshire, England.

Be sure to follow our weekly artist features during Stranger Beings! The exhibition is free and open to the public through November 22.
