This past week the metals department welcomed the visitng artist Sayumi Yokouchi who resides in Brooklyn, New York. Sayumi gave a lecture on Wednesday night followed by a two day workshop on Thursday and Friday. Sayumi is a well established artist who teaches at NYU and also does commissioned pieces. She is a wealth of knowledge and a very talented artist. Below is a couple photos of our time spent with Sayumi. We appreciate her coming and thank Sayumi for what we have gained from her visit.

Hey all! I realize I just posted a bunch of information, but I have some more super interesting things to post as well and I figured I'd be nice and break it up for you :)
At the meeting on Friday, ideas were also tossed around on how we can make the club better than ever! Here are some ideas that were mentioned. If you like any, have some of your own, or think that an idea can be taken further, please comment below!
-Private club critiques: we know you want to critique your pieces with your friends, but not all of you are in the same class, so bring your projects to a club critique and get some fresh opinions!
-Kent State/University of Akron metalsmithing club collaborations- whether you'd like more critique time with fresh faces or want to have a part with Kent State students, we thought that their cool club and our cool club could combine for certain events to make a really cool club!
-Graduate Student or Officer-led classes: this was suggested and is a pretty awesome idea if I do say so myself. If anyone is lost on a certain technique or maybe wants to learn about something that isn't necessarily learned about or expanded on in class, these club classes could be a great way for grad students to get some practice teaching time and for students to learn more about metal!
-Gallery show with the club: We thought that it would be pretty baller if we came up with a theme for a gallery show and had everyone in the club make a piece surrounding that theme and then put the pieces on display in a rented space and have an opening night. This would be a great resume booster, good practice for everyone on how to set up a show, and it'd be really fun for the public to see your work more often! You all work so hard and not every piece you make gets full recognition sometimes.
-Photographer: It's common that you have to submit your work through pictures in order for it to be entered for a show or to be selected for a scholarship opportunity. But not all of us know how to take the best pictures of our work (I know I don't...). So an idea was suggested to bring a photographer in to a club event so that we can have a demonstration/lesson on how to properly take photos of our work.
-The Knight Foundation: for those of you who may not know, The Knight Foundation took proposals on how to improve the city of Akron last year. Proposals can be everything from a small business proposal to building a new art school (just as an example- I rather like Folk Hall) So if you'd like to submit an idea, you can go to their website and fill out a submission form!
Thank you so much for reading through such a long post again! I promise not all of them will be this long, but a lot was discussed at the first meeting. I hope you all are as excited about these ideas as I am and I hope to see your feedback below!

Hey there, Metalsmiths! This past Friday the officers held a meeting and talked about some pretty cool stuff. A lot of people weren't able to attend, so for those of you who wanted to know what we talked about at the meeting, here it is:
-We have decided to change the club's name to the Akron Metalsmithing Guild. After more people join the many social media sites that we have, we will officially change the name to avoid any confusion.
-Anyone interested in joining the club if you haven't gotten the chance to yet can talk to any one of the officers in the Metals Room at any time. Don't know who we are? Well Jaclyn is the President, I am the VP, Liz is Treasurer, Emily O and Emily B are club representatives, and if you don't recognize any of those names, well you can just talk to Sherry or Sophia!
-If you've taken the first step and expressed an interest in joining the club, then yay! All you have to do is sign-up on the registration form (see Jaclyn), like the page, and give a $5 membership dues to Liz or Jaclyn. Once your dues are paid you will be sent an invite to join our Orgsync page, accept and you are officially a member!
-Coming up fast are some important deadlines for the SNAGneXt Conference as well, so for those interested in going this year, make sure you sign up ASAP! (See Jaclyn). Don't know what SNAGneXt is? It is a mini biannual version of the huge conference of the Society of North American Goldsmiths! This year it will be hosted in Ashville, NC a week after the semester ends. It is important for us to find out if you're interested, so please let us know quickly! Or, if you have any further questions, ask any of the officers!
-Unfortunately, this page hasn't been used very much, but we'd like to change that! And we need your help! If any of you have old pictures from Caitie Sellers' lectures or workshop, if you have a particular piece you're proud of, or if you want to advertise a cool article or gallery opening that's happening, please post them to this page! We'd love to see what you've made and what you have to say!
-Lastly, we think our club is naked without a logo, so we want to give it one! But this isn't just our group, it's yours too! So if you have a logo idea or design, please submit it to one of the officers by facebook private message, email, text, or in person by Wednesday afternoon! We can't wait to see what you all come up with!
Thanks for reading all this way! It's greatly appreciated! We hope to see more of you at the next meeting! Stay tuned for more information and for dates on when the next meeting will be.

Caitie Sellers-Artist Lecture in Folk Hall Auditorium Room 165.
Thursday April 16th at 7pm & Friday April 17th at Noon.
Workshop on Saturday the 18th from 10am-5pm (please sign up for demo in the Metals Studio, Rm 187).

Metalsmith Caitie Sellers is coming all the way from Texas to speak to Myers students and the public! On Thursday during the 7pm lecture, she will be introducing us to her work and special technique of soldering steel and silver together. Then on Friday at Noon Caitie will be giving her insight on the professional practices in the art field. Both lectures will be greatly beneficial to students and artists alike.

On Saturday the 18th 10am-5pm Caitie will be hosting a workshop in the Metals Studio Room 187. The workshop will be on soldering steel and silver three-dimensionally, students are encouraged to sign up to participate in Room 187, priority going to Metals Club students. The demonstration will be open to the public to view, but will not be able to participate.

Jewelry and sculpture inspired by the urban landscape.

Hello Metals Club! Just a quick update and announcement. At the last meeting it was decided that we will be selling various versatile etched doodles (as pendants/charms and pins). These pieces are images of food and various other images with pun-ny sayings paired with them etched into copper/brass and are able to be jump ringed for necklaces, bracelets, and keychains, and also can have pin backs glued to the back. This Friday and Saturday (January 23rd and 24th) we need YOUR help to put these pieces through the etching process/finish them up. They will be simple to make and there is a sign up sheet next to the main metals room door so that we can get a general head count of who will be around on what days to help! There are no time commitment constraints, just help out as much as you can and have a good time! (Yes, there will be cookies.) We also need to find a common time during the week that the club can meet, we have yet to ask Benita to come back and we need to get on that! There will be a poll put up shortly on Orgsync so watch for it!
